I would bet the data (not just the carrier frequency) is different for the separate vs all-in-one key. If that's the case, then the ECM is involved too and I don't think it would be an easy swap.
Personally, I'm thrilled that the key is separate from the remote as I never keep them together and don't like the bigger keys. That way when I lock my key in the trunk I can get it back. Plus, it makes it easier when I discard the OEM remote for an after-market.
