Default Satellite Radio

Anyone here install an aftermarket Satellite Radio unit WITHOUT replacing the cars head unit?

Where did you put it?

I purchased a Sirius unit, I think it is much better than XM, and I want to keep the car looking stock at first glance. Any ideas? Pics?

I was thinking of using the "cup holder" since I don't carry drinks in my car anyway.

Thanks for any help!

Hi: Here is the location I used for my XM control head. I did replace the HU as I wanted to be able to listen to CDs I burned in MP3 format and also have more power to the speakers The mount is available from Crutchfield for about $25 and con be removed from the car with out much trace, just 3 holes in a piece of plastic. If you do use this method do not rely on the glue as it soon will give up.

I installed the CD changer under the seat and the antenna in the secret compartment. The plastic cover does not inhibit reception and t he convertable top is transparent to the signal.

I just installed XM in my mom's Mazda3 yesterday I have seen people mount V1 displays and VTEC controllers in the cup holder so you could probably make it work with a fair amount of cutting. Which controller did you buy? What are the dimensions?

I gotta say I went with XM partailly because the units and antennas were smaller. My install was with a Delphi Skyfi 2 and little antenna pod thing was a breeze to mount on the dash (and it gets full signal there too -- score!)

It would be so easy to mold that right into the sunvisor. Kinda like the way my VAF-C is molded. It would be mostly out of the way and it would keep your car looking completely stock from the outside.

This is what it would look like:

I had the visor rewrapped in black vinyl to hide the wires. Then I dremeled out around the visor pivot on the left hand side and ran the wiring down the a-piller.
