I recently started a topic (looking to get a little louder) and said I didn't want to install a subwoofer. I changed my mind on that one.

Since I already had my amp installed and the rear channels not being used I decided to bridge them (producing 90W) and run a wire to the truck. We had a couple old school Kicker Solo-Baric S12D's (last version before they went square, I believe) sitting in the basement so I threw it in the trunk. I was surprised how much bass I got from 90W. This allowed me to set the x-over higher on the front speakers (boston acoustic S65RC) so they can get louder.

I didn't want to keep the Kicker in the truck as it takes up too much space. I considered many options including custom builds out of MDF or fiberglass but ultimately decided to keep it simple and order an enclosure from Zenclosures. I got the 10" box with recessed opening and cover with grill.

The shipped quickly and is nicely made. I went to install the Infinity 1060W and ran into a problem. The hole in the box is slightly over 9" while the Infinity calls for 9-1/4" This can be a bigger pita than it sounds. The hole is recessed so a jigsaw cannot be used. A standard router cannot fit in the recessed area. Further, it is not easy to find a rabbeting bit for a router that removes only 1/8". To deal with this we machined a custom pilot for the router to allow a rabbet to be routed around the hole. When I inspected the speaker I realized I did not need to enlarge the entire hole so that made this easier. I actually like this arrangement as it better surrounds the t-nuts with material.

The cover is proud of the flat surface of the truck by about 3/4". The grill is flush with the cover. Without the cover the enclosure is pretty much flush with the left and right sides.

Here is the amplifier install. The small Pioneer GM-D1004 is simply zip-tied in place under the dash. This is convenient as I only needed to run a speaker wire to the trunk. I'm not looking for big bass but I'm surprised how much I get out of this setup. I haven't done much listening yet but so far I would say it sounds about the same as the 12" Kicker that I removed.

Thanks, guys. I'm happy with the sound. I posted these photos mostly because I couldn't find many pictures of these enclosures online so I figured it may help somebody out.

 

I got one on the way. This is my first custom sound system in a car barring a 4 way setup I had for my old car. I'm pretty happy with all the reviews and pictures I've seen. I have a question though. Being new to this, I have a 4-way alpine amp. By my friends recommendation, I ordered a dual voice coil polk MM and the amp is pre-wired and ready for the two channels going to the sub. My question is, seeing how this box uses just one port for the speaker wire, should I just knock that out and just feed the 4 speaker wires to the sub? ALSO... how strong is that screen? I don't carry heavy equipment in my s2000's trunk but I wouldn't want to put something that would dent the screen if it's fragile.

 

How strong is the protective cover grill?

 

i have the same brand enclosure but in 12" variety. the grill on the 10" i imagine is slightly stronger. but i don't worry about setting stuff up to 30lbs on it.

 

Replacing my little 8" elemental design sub with a corner fiberglass box I made with one of these zenclosure boxes. They said they would modify the box to fit the sundown audio 8" SA v.3 I will put in. I didn't notice any extra charges for this. I was asking through emails before placing the order. For anyone looking they recommended the Sundown SA 8" over the 10" for the S2k.

On my DVC sub I ran the wires around the sub which brings 1 positive 1 negative to the post. This is going to a Sundown 100.4 amp, which powers the front speakers and the sub.

 

Just ordered the zenclosure 12" a few days ago, can't wait until it arrives.
