I used to have mine mounted in the sliding compartment between the seats. It really wasn't mounted as much as placed. I hid the wires the best I could by taking off the center console. Wires were still visible to the power unit.
Antennae was in secret compartment.
I replaced the plug 'n play with a dedicated unit. Much happier not having something rattling around.
I suppose you could get a flexible Arm to do it. Or, check out the new SIRIUS silhouette. The new portable unit. That would work with an aux connection like an iPod.
I already have the unit from my previous car. I had considered the dedicated unit but didnt really feel the need to purchase one since I already had it. The unit I have has an audio out (which I think may allow me to plug into an aux in on my new HU).
I was thinking of going nuts and cutting a whole in the center console and flush mounting it.
I have the Sirius Sportster Replay in my '06 S taken from my old Accord. It's mounted with the suction cup on bottom left corner of my windshield, on the drivers side. It's a pretty big unit, btw, but it doesn't block my view in any way whatsoever; I've just never needed to look there.
I was able to snake the power cable down around the back of the steering wheel mount to some hook-like piece of plastic behind the dash. Then I tucked it in through the center console leather until it comes out behind my seat to the power outlet. It's practically invisible and this way it doesn't block any guages. The only thing that's annoying was hitting my elbow into the plug once in a while after I first put it in but I eventually got used to it.
The FM antenna tucks right behind the A-Pillar. You can't see it and it points straight up for a strong, clear signal. The Sat antenna sits on the right hand side of my dash stuck next to the glass with some double sided tape. It doesn't move and the wire tucks between the windshield and the dash to the back of the unit.
It works perfectly and it's almost a stealth install. Having it near the stock stereo controls is a big plus when changing channels and the blue glow of the Replay version looks sweet with my Laguna blue paint.
I will eventually get a Sirius-enabled headunit, however, because I don't like having such a tempting thing right out in the open like that. Most people can't figure out what it is though and assume it's an aftermarket tach or something like that so maybe it's not so bad but I just don't like taking chances. I'll put some pictures up later tonight when I get home.
As promised (better late than never) the photos of my only "mod" done so far:
The main view of my radio with the wires hidden. You can still see part of the power wire at the bottom left corner of the gauge cluster. From there it snakes out of sight in between the top of the steering column and the dash. This pic makes it look like it blocks my view significantly but my head actually sits about a foot higher than where the camera is so it isn't bad at all. Hmm, I probably should have closed my garage...
In this image I pulled out the FM antenna to show you where it is. Normally it's hidden inside the A-pillar so you can't see it. I also use this rubbery mastic tape on the top left and bottom right corners of the unit to insulate it from the pillar and the dash. Since it basically rests wedged in there I wanted to eliminate vibration and prevent getting any scuff marks. It's barely visible as the black lump at the top left of the unit and it works great.
Here is a pic of where the satellite antenna is from outside of the car. The (way too long, btw) wire hides along the front of the dash to a bundle behind the receiver on the other side. It's hard to tell here but the antenna is oriented so that the Sirius logo is perpendicular to the length of the car. The double sided tape works well at keeping it in place even after sitting in the sun for a while. I tried hiding this in the "secret compartment" before but my signal dropped way too often. It's good about 99% of the time here. Ideally it should be grounded on top of some metal but there's no way that I'm putting it outside of my car.
This shows where I have the power cable hidden next to the center console. I didn't want to have it inside the console itself just in case if I ever need to take it out quickly (road trip in different car, detailing, etc.) so this works out well. After it comes out near the back of the steering column (black/white striped wire on the left), it goes back and "hooks" around a corner of the center console piece, so it hangs in place very well. I normally have the wire hidden behind the plastic and leather for some stealthiness but I pulled it out so you can see the path.
Finally, the wire comes out from the leather part right behind my seat and plugs into the outlet. If I ever need to use the outlet for something else, like a cell phone charger, I just pull it out and lay it across toward the passenger side. It sucks having to listen to crappy regular radio when I do this so it doesn't happen very often but at least I know it won't pull the wire out and ruin my setup.
