Sony DSX-S100
#11
Not to revive an old post, but I figured I'd post this review for anyone who might be considering the Sony DSX-100. I didn't put this in my S2000, but in my winter car, a 2006 Honda Element.
Pros:
+ Price: $130. Cheap head unit, especially for one with iPod integration
+ Tune Tray. someplace to store your iPod or USB device, neat
+ iPod integration is simple to navigate through artist, playlists, etc
Cons:
- The blue is really bright. The dimmer only controls the right side display with the text, there is no way to adjust the button brightness.
- No display color choice on the S100. Just blue. (I believe the S200 and S300 have blue & red). Doesn't match my Element's or the S2000's dash lights.
- There's no display mode to show the clock + what you're listening to. Either you get the input type (FM1,AM, USB) + Clock or Display mode of what you're listening to, like artist and song name. There's no way to show artist and song along with a clock.
- Scrolling text on this display is not fluid and ghosts a bit. Not to mention it's a bit distracting. I just shut it off completely.
- If you leave the device inside the Tune Tray and shut off the car it will beep and show a warning to remind you the device is inside the unit.
- There are no 1-6 type buttons for presets, switching FM stations takes some getting used to.
For a budget unit it sounds nice and the ipod controls are intuitive. However I find the button brightness is excessively distracting. I could see it fitting into a late model civic dash (the ones with the blue tach and speedo) but otherwise not in an S2000 with everything else being amber, no. Not having the clock on the Title display modes really annoys me as well. If I had to do it all over again I would probably have gone with the S200 model, but as far as I can tell the button brightness can't be changed there either, but at least it can be set to red. Or, if getting into the $200 range anyway an Alpine Ida-x303, IMHO would probably be a better choice.

I'm seriously considering the DSX-S200X...I'm just looking for a relatively low priced head unit that will give me instant ipod compatibility and connection...I especially like the fact that this baby has a tray...very clean

I'll take some pics for you.
I know Modifry comes highly recommended and sounds like a nice piece, but a buddy of mine owns a car stereo store and hooked me up with an Axxess Interface that works great...dash controls work, very easy install, and I saved a few bucks.

In case you want to change the brightness I recorded a video when I did mine:

Still would have gone with the Alpine...

is the DSX-S200 really worth the extra $50 when compared to the DSX-S100??

^ I guess...I'm just looking for a nice little upgrade from stock w/out spending too much money considering I'd have to get the Modifry DIC IR
I do like the bigger screen too and the USB in the front
one more thing...does this have a built in sub?
