Sound sensing volume control?

Just got my new silver/black. Really love it! Has anyone had any experience with adding a piece of electronics that would raise and lower the volume based on the ambient sound level. I've heard of these before, but don't know if they are an aftermarket item that can be added to the S2000. Thanks for your help, this is a great forum!

My Z3 radio had this feature and I found it of little value. The remote volume right next to my left hand works great, however.

My head unit (Blaupunkt SF) has this feature, using a microphone positioned near my ear. It is nice to be able to hear the radio while driving, but not be blaring when you hit a stoplight.

I heard that the Miata folks used to have a mod that did what you are asking, but it was supposed to be fairly ineffective. I haven't seen anything for the S2000.

I think it would be useful, it could even just be speed dependent. As you go faster, the volume increases.

Any ideas?

Ideas, Would I be deaf if I hit 160?

The units they use in the Merc. SL's are very effective, but I have not seen a unit that you could add on before.

I'm currently running a mod I built that bumps the volume up one notch at 45 mph and again at 65 mph (adjustable). Works with stock head unit. ( I do have additional amp/speakers, but the factory dash unit)

It doesn't lower the volume till you drop 10 mph below the "up" point, so it doesn't annoy you with frequent volume changes.

Works fine for me, and not too hard to install, just took a while to get a circuit that worked well.

Just what am I supposed to share? Are you able to build from a parts list/schematic? Or do you want a complete unit wif color instructions and video tape showing you how to set it up? (kidding)

Parts cost is probably around $25-$30 (2 IC's, 25 other parts), and would take me about 2 -3 hours to build, but then I got tools out the wazoo. I made the pc board at home, could make more if coerced. Give me an idea of your capabilities and we'll discuss. What have you got to trade? I need some good shock sensors for my stook, not like the almost-usless Bulldog doo-hickies I have now.

I have a Blaupunkt Casablanca. This unit features speed sensitive volume but it must be connected to the Vehicle Speed Sensor to work. Does anyone have access to a wiring diagram that would point me in the right direction to hook this up?

There is an easy connection behind the driver's side kick panel. Looking from the transmission toward the left side of the car, there will be a blue connector at the bottom front. It is the wiring connector closest to the foot rest, and has 16 wires in it. The blue/white wire is the vehicle speed sensor connection. It is the only blue/white wire on this connector, and is between a white/blue and a yellow/red. This is where I tapped in for my homemade volume control.

If you don't have a manual this may help too:
To remove the kick panel
1. pull the door threshold up first - it just snaps out, (3 clips).
2. at the very top left of the kick panel, remove the plastic trim fastener behind the rubber door gasket.
3. pull the kick panel out by gentle yankage of the two snap clips, one close to the firewall, the other close to the door opening.
4. you'll have to pull the hood lever "open" to get the panel off.

I've had this panel off so many times I don't even bother putting the clips back in place. Let us know if the Blaupunkt feature works.
