the black and red wires look (to me), like the amp's line level inputs....

here's the manual for this amp: http://www.kicker.com/images/manuals/I4ChAmpsMan.pdf

hopefully that should help us. if you ask me (which you didn't), i feel fairly confident that this is the Kicker Impulse IX704.

looks like the 4 different blue wires we're seeing are a speaker wire run from the HU and back to the speakers. taking a look at the amp's manual, verifies that those are the line level inputs for the amp... specifically the front inputs.

this is starting to smell like it could be a ground loop issue. but before we look into that -- is it just me, or in this picture:

does that guy have the speaker level inputs wired to a common ground!?!? i'm thinking this probably shouldn't be a common ground setup.

edit: just in case it isn't obvious, i'll lay it out clearly -- these black wires should be connected to the - lead of their appropriate speaker wire... i do not think they should be wired to ground.

That's what I was trying to figure out PJK...according to the Kicker site that is the Hi Level Input so the black wires should go back to the HU same as the reds. Neg. and Pos. speaker level outputs from the HU, right???

*edit* Ooops...missed your edit! Definetely agree on the ground loop issue.

The black wires were wired to the ground by an audio shop
I'll try conencting them to the negative of the speaker wire instead and see if that helps

Really appreciate help
I'll update once I have the negative wired properly

try to be sure you match off the right and left accordingly.

and while i'm saddened to hear the shop did it that way, i'm not entirely surprised...
