Default Speaker problem Help wanted!

Hello i have a 2003 s2000 and i am having a problem with the sound system in the car. There is no sound coming through the speakers but the radio still turns on. I dont think the speakers are blown because they don't make any noise.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Can anyone point me in some sort of direction as to what the problem might be.

Thanks in advance.

first i'd check all the fuses.

if it's not a fuse, the problem is one of three things: the radio doesn't produce output to speakers (since the radio has power that's not an issue), the wiring between the radio and the speakers doesn't transfer the signal, or the speakers not working when they have a signal. you said the last one is unlikely, so troubleshoot the other two.

first i would pull out the radio--search for a head unit install thread for instructions. make sure nothing looks off back there, and you can check the speaker lines with a multimeter (or an on-off circuit tester light from autozone). each of the 4 speaker channels has a (+) and (-). when the radio is on and has a little volume, a multimeter will produce voltage or a circuit tester will light up when connected across a pair. they are color coded. one color is the (+) and the (-) is the same color with a stripe. one is purple and another green IIRC.

if the radio is indeed sending the signal out, you can next check and see if the signal is getting all the way to the speakers. search for a DIY on installing new speakers to see how to remove the door panel. pull the speakers and check the wiring the same way as before.

if you had signal at the radio and don't at the speaker, the wiring is the issue. you can check patches of wire from the HU or do other things, but the easiest fix is often to just pull it out and put new wiring in so you don't have to trace the problems. up to you there.

if you have signal at the speaker, the speakers were obviously the problem and need to be replaced.

the two most common problems, if you haven't checked already:
1) try the mute switch on the dash
2) make sure the fader control on the headunit hasn't gotten set to all the
way rearward, as there are no rear speakers in a stock '03
