No, but there is a MOD created by Pinky That will let you use the controls if the replacement head unit uses Infrared Beams.

1) Alpine has an adaptor for their heads, but people are finding it EXTREMELY difficult to get a hold of the adaptors (I think only ONE person has it) (cost about $85, but don't quote me on this).
2) Go with Pinky's PAC SWI-3 pre-made wiring harness for a plug-and-play solution (cost, $150).
3) See my webpage to get your own PAC SWI-3 unit and make your own harness (cost, about $50).
For options 2) and 3), you'll need to choose a head unit that uses an IR remote control.

The Alpine KCE-865B also works with a slew of European Alpine heads that are similar to U.S.A. heads but don't work properly with the U.S.A. am band. The U.S.A. am band has channels in 10 khz steps. The European am band has channels in 9 khz steps. Lots of portable radios can be switched back and forth, but not the Alpine heads.
I went with the PAC SWI-3 and a Radio Shack relay for the mute: part number 275-233.
Furio, I have the XSV1621 and they sound pretty good. The biggest improvement I noticed is driving with the top down. Now I can actually hear something from the speakers. I am not a big audiophile, just looking for something decent. The 1621 is good enough for me. If you want a first hand listen just drop me a line, I work near Westwood, I can meet after work.
Thanks all for you input. I think I'm going to go with the 1631s. I'll take Forrest2B's word that they are a little louder than the 1621s.
I like it loud!
For an extra $20 bucks I can't go wrong.
Wow, you installed them in less than 1 hour! Did you do it by yourself? Did you have to cut the basket like MacGyver did?
MacGyver, nice site. Your detailed instructions will really help with the install.
Mister_Two, Thanks for the offer.
Where do you work? I work in Upper Saddle River. I wonder if I've seen you around town. Maybe one day next week we can meet after work( at your convenience). It would be cool to check them out in person.

Furio,
I think you'll be quite happy with the 1631's, especially for the price. They're just too deep to fit in without cutting the basket, though, so grab yourself a coping saw (I understand at least one person even cut it up with a utility knife...do NOT slip
).

Just installed the Sony 1631's. What a difference! The sound is greatly improved over the stock speakers. Thanks to Mcgyver's page, it was easy to get the doorpanels off for the install. Cutting the baskets was a bit of a pain, but well worth it.
