Splicing into existing 12v accessory power
Hi,
I want to hardwire up a USB socket, I'm thinking about using something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271204565730
If I were to use one of those, is there any reason why I couldn't tap into the existing 12v line for the aux socket (under the console) instead of running a new line from the fuse panel?
Cheers

You can definitely do that, especially if you don't intend to simultaneously use
the aux socket, at least not with something that draws a lot of current.
Have a look at Modifry's trunk switch/accessory socket mod to give you some
useful info. Bear in mind his instructions are for a US (LHD) car.

There are other things on the same fuse, such as the radio. You're unlikely to have a problem,
but by adding the ability to plug in multiple accessories simultaneously, you at least run the
risk of bringing it closer to the limit. Most electronics don't draw a lot of current,
but things like air compressors, vacuum cleaners and the such do.

Hi,
In the fuse box underneath the dash there are 3 power sources you can get power from. 1 is straight 12vdc, 2nd is 12vdc switched from ignition (acc) and the 3rd one works with the light switch. I read a lot of threads of people wanting to tap off other circuits which I personally do not like to do and do not recommend. Just run a new circuit from one of these 3 that best fits what you want to do. You will want to run an inline fuse for protection. They look like male spade connectors inside the fuse box. You can buy and inline fuse and crimp a female spade connector (quick disconnect) and slide it right in.

Running a new line's not a big deal -- especially if you're running it to the spot people frequently use for an additional power outlet.
