Stock theft immbolizer system - still need alarm??
Well it has been 4 days now since I got my S2K. I am having Lojack installed tommorow.
I wanted to ask you guys if the stock theft immoblizer system offers any real protection? What exactly does it do??
Do most of you still have aftermarket alarms installed. Could you please recommend a few and their approximate prices including installation.
I really want my car to be secure since my carport is not gated!
Thanks.

Your key has a chip in it with a specific code. If this chip is not thre, car won't start... unless you tow it.
I've thought about lojack... but the thing is I want to prevent them from stealing it... I don't want to try and have to track it down after it's stolen. Plus Ir eally don't want it after someone else takes it to do who knows what to it.
I'd say invest in a good alarm... clifford comes to mind. They are expensive, but have good technology to back up the product. A competent installer is VERY VERY VERY important. Infact, the alarm is only as good as the installer.

I'll agree with what Shingles says.
The immobilizer does work to reduce the chance of the car being stolen (kept my wife's Integra from being stolen); the thief would either have to be very sophisticated, have inside Honda equipment, or most likely a flatbed.
I did invest in an aftermarket alarm, however, to try to reduce the chance of stereo/personal effects/other contents from being stolen, and general vandalism. I got a Clifford system with microwave sensor to detect motion in the cabin. It makes a warning tone when the outer perimeter is violated, and only goes to full alarm when the inner perimeter is broken. The sensitivity is adjustable via the remote, which is nice.
I have been having some weird electrical problems with the alarm, so I hesitate to recommend it, at least until I get it all squared away.
As Shingles says, the installer is key.
Hope this helps,
Ted

In my opinion, alarms are good for your piece of mind and to deter amateurs. If a pro really wants your car it will be gone ... in 60 seconds
... or less! I think that the immobilizer system is very effective at deterring a drive-away assault, but nothing, not even an alarm, will prevent someone from towing the car away.
Most people ignore car alarms because they falsely sound so frequently. In fact there is an alarm sounding right now from an SUV in the parking lot below my office window. It does this for about 30 minutes every morning, the owner won't fix it, so we all ignore it.

I went with an Alpine SEC-8063 w/ a radar sensor. I've seen folks on this board recommend it as well as Clifford and some of the Viper models. For me the determining factor was the installer. There is no Clifford dealer in town and the places that carry Viper didn't exactly elicit my confidence. Alpine was a little more expensive but the installer was first rate and I couldn't be more pleased.
