Smile Sub = rattle galore

Just put in my new sub the other day. It sounds fantastic with rock. but if I play some hiphop or anything with bass I get insane rattles even at fairly low volume. this is with the top up (gimme a break it's been in the 30's). Anybody know of some kind of solution? I'm running a 10" kicker in the tool well with a 600 watt amp.

I get hardly any raddle with the top up but I do get a sound coming from the back left. It resembles a very high pitch rattle. It sounds like a blown speaker but I've verified that its not. It even makes the sound when I fade the speakers to the front. Only does it with bass. I cannot figure out what it is. Just happens with the top up.

Ya I went out last night with top down and it sounds great. just with top up the most annoying one seems like it comes from right behind my head. but I do hear a lot more with the top up.

I suggest parking the car in your driveway (or an abandoned parking lot if you like your neighbors and want them to still like you), crank the music, and then try to identify where the rattle is coming from. lol

I have a 12 in the tool spot from Zenclosures on Ebay. 1st thing...12 in that small of a box sounds like crap, get a 10. I got the 12, because I asked and the guy said he never tested a 12 but people have and he had no complaints. My 10 in a single box sounded better. 2nd Zenclosures had cut the 12 inch diameter on my box a little TOO BIG! So if you screw one side of the speaker in, the cut hole line runs through the screw holes on the other side. AHHH! 3rd it RATLLES like a B facing UPWARDS! Although it looks cool in the tool area it sounds like crap & rattles. Thats my experience.

600watt amp? RMS or peak output? 600 rms would blow the cone right off your 10 unless its a very expensive sub.

I have the same problem. Running a 10" at 300wrms. Sounds great full cranked to hip-hop with the top down. When the top is up, the soft top tray rattles SO much that I usually turn my sub all the way down or even off.

I do not even see anything to tighten back there, plus it is hard to work back there.

Any ideas?
