Thinking of buying a radar detector, your opinions...
most likely...
i wasn't uber keen on upgrading, but took the opportunity when it came along for a relatively inexpensive upgrade... if nothing else, i really wanted the alleged improved range.
but then again - even if it's a gizmo piece of tripe to sell more detectors -- why disable it? why not leave it on and tell you over and over how great it is?

Valentine turns off the photo band by default. I suppose they all have different things they do.
I'm just not worried about POP. The new threat here is laser. I got hit on Sunday. Second time in 2 weeks. Fortunately I usually drive slow as hell on congested roads.

yeah, i've been tagged quite a bit lately w/ laser. i think our city PD probably got a couple recently...
they're sneaky little bastards with it, too...
my main concern regarding POP is that it sounds like a 'cheaters' way to write tickets... and over here, you get some kangaroo court stuff going at times...
so, i'd like to be educated and aware... still, i think POP detection will mostly be a ticket detector... hopefully just not my ticket...

Returned my V1 and bought a X-50 this am. All because of the POP detection of the X-50. I don't think I will be using it that much since I hate the false beeps a lot. But its good to have it as an option in case I change my mind.
V1 was great, used it for 2 weeks, too many falses and its harder to read compare to the Escort. I bought the V1 because of the range difference comparing to the old 8500. But with the new detector I think the range are pretty much equal. With less false and POP ....
I also got a good deal, (even though price is not an object) 259.99 off of bestbuy

It was the LED's. You have to look hard and figure out which one is blinking when there's a new bogey and which one is lighting up solid during the night.
I also got used to just figuring it out with the sound, so braaap is K and brap brap is KA, but then there is beep beep for new bogey.
I guess its something that you will get used to as use the detector but the too many information was just too much for me. The most that bothered me is the false detection I get, I usually get 1 false with the old escort and the V1 gives out 5 falses during a 15 mile drive.
Not that Im sayign the V1 is not good but seeing a warning and slowing down right away is much simplier that seeing a detection, figuring out if its a threat or not then slow down.
Personaly I think the Filter of the 8500 is much better than the V1. Less false causes you to react quicker during a detection, rather than getting use to it and tend to ignoring it.
Also V1 cannot detect POP which I think is an option I might need to use when chps starts using em more. I haven't tried how much false ill be getting with it, but its an option id like to have in the future.
The new X50 is much havier than the old one. Suction cups are bigger, but the mounting of the V1 is way better than the escort. No bouncing around...

I understand now. And yes, the LEDs for the bands of radar are a pain. I actually suggested that they might offer different color LEDs for different bands in a stoplight config. Like green for x, amber for K, and red for Ka, and blue for laser, but laser is pretty obvious.
In any event, I don't drive very fast anyway, so I don't find myself slowing down a lot when the detector goes off. I just check my speed, and if Im a little over I back off. Usually I'm within 5mph of the limit so no biggie.
The V1 earns it's real money for me on the highway. Although I tend to do 75 almost all the time, occasionally I'll push it a bit or hook on to a fast pack of cars. Out there, there are very few falses, and the range of the V1 really shines.
Good luck with your X50.
