I'm sure the wiring to make this happen is relatively simple. Can anyone lend me some insight?

 

I'll say it, just in case you didn't know and this turns out to be the problem...you have to HOLD the trunk button for a second or two before it activates the solenoid.

 

Do you mean you are pressing a button with a trunk on it? Or a button that says "option". If your third button does not say "option", you may have the wrong remote.

 

And I've never seen the remote work while the key is in the ignition (safety interlock?).

 

Yup. On the keyless entry unit (up under the dash near the w/w intermittent relay) there is a red/white wire that tells the unit when the key is in the ignition.

I haven't tried it myself (because I have other more convenient ways of opening the trunk) but if you disconnect that red/white wire you may find the remote works all the time.

If you try this, let us know what happens. If it smokes, you didn't hear it from me.

And just in case it works like I think it will:

Cruel trick # 57 - when (if) someone else is driving your car - keep the remote with you and press the PANIC button.

EDIT - If you want your remote to work when the key is in the ignition, you have to cut two wires on the Keyless Entry Module:

1. The red/white wire in the middle of the connector.
2. The yellow wire that is between a black wire and a white wire.

Make sure you insulate both cut wires. Be careful as there are 2 yellow wires. Do NOT cut the yellow wire on the end of the connector.

 

The third button does say option- buy on my price/options sticker it lists that the trunk should be remotely operated.

Yes I did hold down the button- I appreciste someone bustin' my balls though.

I'm not talking about when the key is in the ignition- just ehrn I am walking up to it.

 

I think what LATEOTT was driving at is whether you have the correct transmitter for your car. Cars without the factory alarm system have remotes with 4 buttons, a red panic bar, a small round unlock button, a small round trunk open button, and a large oval lock button. If your remote has the option button, I THINK that's designed for a car with the alarm. If you have the option button on the remote and don't have an alarm, you may have the wrong remote.

In any case, this is certainly something that the dealer should assist you with - perhaps the trunk solenoid is faulty? To test the solenoid, see if the trunk opening switch in the center compartment opens the trunk. If it does, the solenoid works.

 

I had the same problem when I was under the mistaken impression that I had the factory alarm and not the keyless entry. I no longer have the keyless entry box (went to an Alpine Alarm) but when I did, I thought the same thing. Turns out that you only get the remote trunk opener w/ the factory alarm. What your options/sticker list was probably referring to was the remote button in the glove box storage between the seats.
