Upgrade 2002 Sounds
Thinking about upgrading the lower door speakers, adding a subwoofer and some amplification. Is there a good thread whith install photos that addresses these issues?
Do I need to upgrade the tweeters?
Also the guy at the auto audio store said I "must" upgrade the head unit; it will sound like crap if I don't. I think it's a pretty good sounding unit. Says it's not compatable with what I want to do with the speakers. Hmmm. Is this just a sales pitch, or what. Sounds pretty cheesy to me.
Thanks,
Happ

I have an 02, and I just replaced the stock speakers with MB Quart separates. I tried the 6.5 first, listened then the tweeters. I have yet to replace the stock head unit. All and all the sound was greatly improved. I will be replacing the stock head unit to get more power (CDA-7894 60wx4) soon (any day, looking for a good local price). I will also be adding a set of rear speakers to fill. I was trying to see if I could get out of replacing the head unit. I think I could have, but I wanted MP3 and a little more volume (80 of the freeway, top down).
Even @ 85 volume it is still clear as a bell. But after that it starts to get muddy.
I have an amp, I was going to use, but I want to see if I can get by without it.
The installer is right and wrong. You can install just what you want, but inoder to add the amp, you will need a line level converter between the stock head unit and the amp. There are very different opinions no how well this works (sounds).

you can only get so much out of your stock deck. If adding an amp a new deck is a must for a nice clean signal. A new deck alone may provide the clean sound you want without a lot of work. Adding a mono sub from that isn't difficult.

Jshahan,
I installed Lucid's rear speakers and they improved my sound by about 80%. More bass....fill.
I would like to keep the oem hu and wonder if I now just replaced the door 2 ways with the Quartz speakers you have and left my stock tweeters in, if it would be a definite and quite noticeable improvement. What do you think?

Tigger,
Two posts up, Lucid, is the man you want to talk to about rear speaker upgrades...quite a few of us on here have pioneered one idea or another when everyone else was doubtful, myself included. Lucid's main contribution was the rear speaker panel. You COULD do your own, but when you look at the pricing scheme he has, it's only worth the trouble doing it yourself to a VERY select few...he's got good prices on the panels.

I replaced the tweeter in the doors and it was a direct swap. the .75" MB QUART TI Tweeters will mount using the stock hardware. I went so far as to replace the stock grill on the tweeters with the MB QUART tweeter grills. It looks great and sounds even better.
