For me, subwoofers made the difference. I use Focal IBUS-20 powered plates behind the seats.

Exactly why I went with a cheapo system in this S2000 (last one I did the $2k thing). This time around $400 bucks, same Kenwood head unit as OP, Polk 6502, shit load of sound deadening, random 12 inch Kenwood sub in tool well box, and a Cerwin Vega b54 amp tucked under the dash to power it all. Sounds loud and full at a 100 mph with the top down, which was the goal, but I am actually surprised how good it ended up sounding quality wise as well, besides the tweets being a little too bright.

I just upgraded my stereo as well. Full JL audio with custom sub box etc. Having a great stereo definitely makes a big difference
