Upgrading Stereo
I'm sure this was asked so many times but i tried searching and i didn't get the answer i wanted. I want to upgrade the stereo and the speakers in the car.
What do you guys recommend for an aftermarket headunit? also i want to change the speakers on the doors. All 4 of them. I don't want to spend too much but don't want to get something bad. I want something in the middle. I don't want to get an amplifier but i do want to put a subwoofer in the trunk too.
Also if i do put a sub in the trunk, if i put some stuff on it, would it make the sound weird?
Last think, how much would this whole thing cost?

the best way to do things and the cheapest way with a decent sound.
1. Alpine MRP F450 thats a 4ch amp with line input connections. $200-$300 try E-bay
2. both the radio harness www.installer.com $20.00
3. sub enclosure that goes on the side of the trunk ( i have one for sale upgraded to a 12" sub in the tool well) $110 used $150 new i think.
4. 8" JLW3 $150.00
run the stock components on CH 1 and Ch2, Bridge 3 and 4 for the Sub.
your talking maybe 600 bucks if you do the install. It's a budget system with decent sound. you can also pick up speakers from an AP2 which does not use paper cones for dirt cheap and that improves the sound by 50%

Well here's my approx system that had similar restrictions that you have, although the cost may be a little high depending on what you consider "too much".
Head Unit: Alpine CDA-9857 (selected this unit for the 3.5mm jack for the dci and the fullspeed ipod). I think it was 350 including the ipod cable.
DCI: Modifry Wired for Alpine - 100
Door speakers: Alpine Type-S (I think I bought them for 150ish or something, I dunno, bought them from www.hookedontronics.com)
Sub: Infinity BasslinkX (bought from hookedontronics also, forgot the price of it too).
Wiring, harnesses, other misc install details (loom, zip ties, snake for the door wiring, etc): probably 150 ish.
I think I spent right around 1,100 or so but the improvement was well worth it. It's enough to hear with the top down. Sometimes I wouldn't mind more (on low level recorded MP3s from the iPod in particular) but...
