all radars pick up a transmitted signal given out by the other radar. the reason why it goes off when you pass by stores with automatic doors. they use the same type of laser to bounce off of your body to open the door for you. its the same concept with the laser gun an officer uses when he tries to clock you. a laser is sent out and bounces off your car and comes back and displays your speed. the radar detector is meant to catch this laser and report it to you that you are being clocked or in other cases a laser is being transmitted somewhere.

all in all it can detect most cops if their laser gun is on. if it isnt on then it wont detect.
