How sensitive is the proximity sensor and will it go off every time a cat goes on my car?

I am going to assume that by "proximity sensor" we're really talking about "motion sensors". Having spent over 30 years in electronic security, most of that in bank security, there are such things as true proximity sensors but they only work in fixed environments. For example, if you move the desk farther away from the safe you have to re-tune the system, and that just doesn't work with an automobile that might be parked 20 feet or 2 feet away from another object.

That said, the answer to your question is yes, no, and maybe. It's like asking "Will thunder wake me up?". It depends on where you are (in a tent or in an underground bunker), how loud the thunder is, and how sensitive you are to noise when you're sleeping. As hockeylfe11 says, it's all about the sensitivity setting.

Most of these motion sensors are microwave Doppler-shift devices, sort of like radar. They transmit a radio signal that bounces off of other objects and analyze the reflected signal to see if the object is moving. The adjustments control at what speed the alarm is tripped, and in some cases how strong the signal has to be in order to cause a trip. So your neighbor's cat might trip the alarm if he's big enough, or if he moves fast enough, or if he gets close enough, as distance, speed, and size are all part of the equation. A sensor that will trip when a person is within 1 foot will probably trip when that U-haul panel truck (all metal and very reflective of microwaves) pulls up and parks 20 feet away. Are you OK with that?

Personally, for a car alarm with an audible sounder I would only use a motion sensor if it was set really low so that it won't trip unless someone gets inside the car. If you're using a 2-way remote and no sounder (like me) and you resolve yourself to visually check the car if the sensor ever trips, then you can adjust the sensitivity higher. When I stayed in hotels 3-4 days a week I always parked where I could view the car from the hotel window, that way when it tripped in a rain storm it was easy to see if it was being tampered with.

Yes this is a big one. Also i was an installer for best buy for about 5 years and not all places solder their connections, many places use t taps because it is easier to do but t taps look messy and can fall off. An alarm is only as good as it is installed. Are you planning on getting a remote start alarm done or just a basic one? Also keep in mind some shops will not do remote start alarms on a stick. If you want to add a trunk pop that could cost extra. I have also noticed after talking to older coworkers who still do car audio work, a lot of shops dont do remote start alarms often so if a newer installer is going to do your car it may be their first remote start alarm they do.

My opinion is that alarms give people a false sense of security, annoy people and bring unnecessary attention to your car. Having said that I would only install a factory OEM alarm with hood sensors. It comes with the harness and can be installed easily without any major modifications to the OEM electrical system or body. I believe the insurance rates are cheaper with an alarm. I have a brand new never installed OEM factory alarm with hood sensors on hand if anyone is interested in buying. PM if interested.
