I disagree with the above. The reason why I disagree is if you keep the stock HU and the stock speakers and you amp them all your going to get is loud crappy sounding music.

Crappy signal into the amp from the crappy HU = crappy sound coming out your speakers.

Your stock speakers will sound much better installing a new HU. This is a proven, tested fact.
But it will be louder crappy sound over factory. It was just another option.

I want to keep my stock head unit so that the dash controls work properly (as my wife will pitch a HUGE fit if anything seems out of order.) I have a very nice Kenwood in my truck that I bought to use with the iPod but am uneasy about the "solutions" to the dash control problems. I would love to hear from people that have changed their head and kept the controls.
As it is a convertible, how much better is the sound quality going to get? I just want to be able to hear it when I am at 80 on the freeway with the top up or down. Yes, I know...turn the radio off and listen to the engine. I do but tunes are nice sometimes also. (Traffic reports can come in handy also.) When is Honda going to put the traffic nav from the Acura (RL?) in all the other cars?

I still have the factory HU, but I don't think I've ever seen any real issues with those that used a DCI with their aftermarket HUs.

The main goal to my "system upgrade" was to acheive greater volume to combat noise. I retained my factory HU, upgraded the stock speakers to some Polk Audio Momo components and fed those with an amplifier (115+ watts rms) and am very happy with the results -- volume and excellent mid-bass. Fortunately, my upgrade was fairly cheap as a result of some hook-ups.

The only thing she'll notice is the louder, cleaner sounding music Just get an aftermarket HU and a DCI and install them. Plus with the DCI there are actually more options after its installed than just the stock ones. She might even like it better.

She might not realize how bad it the stock setup is until you give her something to compare it to.

Dash control solutions are great and worth the money......I've used the PAC SWI-X and Modifry DCI.

The PAC was fine and preserved the exsisting controls. Was a bit harder to install, but was easy to program. A separate relay is necessary to preserve the mute function. I never had any problems with mine.

The DCI solution is superior in every way, installation, usage and additional controls. Well worth the extra money. It is wicked awesome.

Install a new HU and you'll notice the difference right away. Right now the only stock part of my stereo system are the door speakers. But with tuning of the HU and sub amp, most people think they're also upgraded.

The factory system isn't the worst I've had to deal with (that award goes to Ford, so far) but it's easy to make it better.

Replacing the speakers won't get you much as the signal, and power, going to them isn't going to change.

Oh, you might also get some Dynamatt and put it on the doors around the speakers. Sometimes this will help. I've not tried it in the S yet, but with other cars I've found it helped clean up the sound coming from the factory door speakers. It won't make a big difference, but that plus a new HU should make some decent gains for you.
