I mounted the DCI under the dash where the wires for the camera, GPS, and reverse signal went. The USB dongle from the head unit went in the passenger storage net.
That's very interesting as I all did was plug in the Modrify harness, DCI etc, I totally didn't even think about the GPS as when I was watching Youtube installs it was never mentioned.
Clean install for sure! But still, what is the GPS antenna actually used for? The HU doesn't have a stand alone navigation app, does it? From what I understand, the navigation apps are a reflection of the apps on your phone device. Does the GPS antenna somehow increase the location accuracy from CarPlay or Android Auto? I'm confused. Can't hardly wait to get it installed, I waiting on the Modifry harness and DCI to be delivered.
Speaking of DCI, the YouTube install videos with the Modifry harness and DCI keep the DCI out from behind the HU and tuck it in the passenger storage net. Once it is set up and working, is there any need to keep it out and handy? Couldn't you tidy things up a little and keep it out of the way behind the HU? Thanks!
I think the DCI was instructed to be kept away from HU for heat purposes too.
From what I can tell, it will use location data from the phone if the GPS antenna isn't available, but Apple will not certify a head unit for wireless Carplay without a GPS antenna. It may only make a difference in areas without cell coverage. If you're having no problem without it not a big deal.
Thanks to everyone on this thread for the information on adding Apple CarPlay to the car. I initially purchased a single DIN head unit from Amazon and wrestled to get it to fit. It was a few mm bigger than the opening for the radio. I also could not get the dash controllers to work. After wasting 3 hours, I ran over to Walmart and bought the one discussed on the thread. It was a simple install and it works and fits perfectly. I even updated the firmware to load in a custom start up screen. Do not waste your time with other options, buy the one from Walmart.
Update the firmware per the instructions here .. https://poweracoustik.com/Walmart/ In settings, there will be a new option to load a startup screen. Find you favorite image, Name it per the directions when you select new startup screen and load that on to a memory stick. I grabbed a image that I liked off the internet.
Super appreciate you all with these updates. The custom start up screen is a nice touch. I wish the back up camera covered the entire screen but 60% is better than 0%. I wonder if the developers will update the firmware in the future to use the full screen. Probably not likely but one can hope.
