XM/Terk satellite antenna, another install option
MacGyver, that's a good question and maybe you can explain what the "ground plane" actually does for reception. Right now I have the aluminum floating in the compartment and it is not grounded to anything. The Terk install guide is vague on what the ground plane does and it doesn't mention anything about needing it to be grounded it to the chassis. For example, they say if you are mounting the antenna to a composite (non-metal) surface, you can use aluminum foil to create a ground plane beneath the antenna. They don't mention anything about grounding to the chassis. To be honest I don't notice any improvement in XM reception with the aluminum panel in place.
my GUESS... is that the grounding plane is an area where the satellite signal can bounce off and then be feed it to the antenna.. Much the same as satellite TV... ie the signal bounces off the dish and then is feed to the lnb
hello everyone I am a car audio install for best buy. I do xm and Sirius radios all day long. my store in ithaca NY is actually 1st in the company for satellite radio. the ground plain rarely makes a difference. the only time that we have actually needed one was in a wrangler. a good spot for the antenna in a s2000, is in the area in the trunk where the roof goes in. the antenna will get its signal through the fabric without a problem. if you have any questions about satellite radio I could probably answer them.
