Default 106 rwhp gain on dyno tune

I gained 106 hp with a simple dyno tune.



I purchased the car from a fellow that I respect. He road tuned the car and gave me a lot of good advice. Everything worked well, but I was sucking up fuel like it was going out of style. I would get like 120-130km per tank just cruising around town if I was heavy on the throttle and maybe 215km with mixed city and hwy driving. I wanted to get a baseline dyno to see what was going on and to try to improve fuel economy and see if my power delivery was smooth.

My baseline dyno showed that my AFR was a little rich and that my O2 sensor in my car was probably no longer accurate. My baseline dyno also showed that I was putting down 309 rwhp at 13.5psi on a Mustang Dyno. Mustang dyno's are pretty conservative in nature and they produce typically 15-20% less power than the other two main stream dynos on the market (that's another debate for another thread). My main concern was....is the AFR / o2 sensor accurate and if the power delivery was smooth.

My tuner informed me that the car could improve fuel economy and deliver more power if everything was 'optimized'. I told him to do his magic and tune the car for me. My goals were: 1) improve fuel economy, 2) smooth out pwr band, 3) leave some hp on the shelf to improve overall reliablity.

The results off the Mustang Dyno were pretty good (when compared to the 309 rwhp at 13.5psi I originally made). Power is available upto 8500 rpm (some guys say go 9k, but on the ap2 the stroke is longer than the ap1...so as the OPP say....safety first...hahahah), but on the dyno we only tested upto 8000rpm:

8.5psi 338 rwhp



10psi 379 rwhp (two humps on the dyno were smoothed out - this chart doesn't show it)



14psi 413 rwhp



13.5psi 309 rwhp (original dyno - street tuned - before dyno tuning)



We determined that between 10-14 psi, I was gaining on avg of 8-9 hp per psi increment vs the theorectical 19-21 hp / psi. The restriction was the exhaust. I'm still running stock exhaust (which is rated at 450hp, which on a dynodynamic or hub based dyno would probably translate to 360-370hp on the Mustang Dyno), so I'm pretty happy with the power and I don't need to disturb my neighbors. I'm going to keep it at 10psi for street use and the occasional event. If I have the time to track and need more power, I'll have to decide if I want to free up some hp by changing exhaust, the rad and a larger oil cooler. We never disconnected at the downpipe to see what it would produce without the exhaust restriction, but my guesstimate would be in the 450 range on the Mustang Dyno.

For fuel economy I haven't done much testing, but on a log of mixed city freeway and mild boost here and there I logged 7.1-7.8 liters per 100 km, so on a 40 liter fill I can get a guesstimated 500km range...I have yet to get that as I'm too heavy footed and that's also just the theoretical based on the 50 km log I did on fuel economy. Now if I boost a lot it will go down to about an estimated 240km/tank.

If I get my o2 sensor changed I'll do some more data logging to see if anything needs to be tweaked.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out so far. If any folks can give me some advice on anything I should do....I'm always open to positive and critical advice.

just out of curiousity, what turbo and manifold are you using? nice results by the way. incredible what a tune can do.

you can tell what turbo he is running by his username.
