Default -16an coolant hose conversion

Hi all,

So I bought a used intake mani which has thread on the place where the upper coolant hose is supposed to go.
I need some input from people who use 16an for their coolant hoses. What do I need exactly?

45° on the intake mani? 90° maybe?
What thread is common?

Any input is welcome

Thanks. Jasper

I just did a 16AN conversion over winter. I had my coolant housings modified for 16AN. Off the upper housing I ran a straight 16AN. Complete PITA to align and tighten down. To me it's seems like a 45 off the upper housing would have the hose too close to the engine yet (obviously depends on how far back the connection point is).

Honestly wish I just would've stayed OEM.

Another thing to note is that 16AN is smaller than the OEM hose (20AN is equivalent). My shop mentioned they've seen nothing but issues when going down to 16. I haven't noticed any issues yet. Might eventually use a 16AN to 20AN adapter n then 20AN hose.

if you don't have them already, get a set of AN wrenches

Thank you

The thread in the intake manifold seems much smaller than oem, about 0.85''
I'm thinking it might be a better idea to tap new thread and use a 20an for oem size hose. Why would you ever want to downsize the coolant hose anyway? I don't see any advantages in useing 16an for your coolant hoses

I've ran -16an on numerous applications for coolant hose with no issues at all. I used a 45* off the intake and made my own housing that bolts onto the block. I have a remote mounted "fill neckwith radiator cap" if you wanna call it that.

Do you know what thread is commonly used on the intake manifold?
Aeroflow 45 Degree Male ORB Swivel Hose End -16 ORB to -16AN (AF544-16-16S)
Something like this?

So in case anyone might search for this in the future...

The thread in the manifold is 5/8 (orb10) and in my opion way too small and a true bottleneck. The upper coolant hose is 32mm and so in the hole in the cylinder head. ORB10 is only 20mm
I'm going to drill out the hole in the manifold and tap 1'' NPT thread.

The adapter will be a 1'' NPT to 20AN. Also going to weld a 20AN bung on my radiator.

Any thoughts before going to action?

1" OD is -16an, still going to have a bottle neck there with -20 so why run -20an is my thought...

I run a kinsler intake which comes with a -16an boss threaded port on the flange so never knew the oem port thread.

3/4 npt outside diameter is about as big as 16an
1'npt for 20an

I would go bigger, but 1'' npt thread neads a 29mm (1.14'') hole, and the manifold has no more room for anything bigger than that
