It is also a .83 housing on a 68/75mm turbine wheel. Even though the housing is smaller I believe the effect won't be so large. I did not notice much difference when going from my original .91 housing to the .83. I'm kind of expecting the same difference, just in the other direction.

Finally got around to getting the second wastegate on. The weld bled through a bit better on this elbow. I still went through and welded the inside afterward.

This is the bead of Ni-99 filler before welding the stainless elbow on. And then welding the elbow on with 2 passes of 309L.

Pretty much done with the gates, just need to get the downpipe done before I fit the dumptubes. I may have to aim them up a little based on the space, but I won't know until the downpipe is finished I think.

Thanks.....feels like its downhill from here.

I had to modify the existing charge pipe a little. Then made a new upper charge pipe.

Will eventually try and make an intake enclosure that is fed from the front of the car.

Hello 5thGen,

I recently started following your thread and wanted to start out by thanking you for documenting your process and progress.

I recall someone mentioning some vibration/harmonics that seem to occur with this engine config and came across an issue related. I'd like to say I've never noticed this issue on other platforms I've worked on...

We have a ap2 with a Full-Race twin scroll manifold and I recently installed MVS wastegates and plumbed in the water cooling lines using aluminum hardlines as they are above the manifold and run near the dp.

One of the hardlines broke at the flares after a short time and I chocked it up to random bad luck. The same line broke in the same way shortly after.

At this point discussed the issue with the plumbing ninja at Earl's #1 and he recommended using stainless instead of aluminum. So I purchased the materials and needed up tools needed to work with ss.

After installing the new line and bleeding the systems I gave the engine some revs and noticed a significant vibration that occurs at lowish rpm. Nothing seems broken.

Is this inherent to this platform? What has anyone done to clean this up?

Jeff

Nice setup!

I think its just the platform to be honest. This motor is always cracking and breaking stuff has always been a issue.
Personally I haven't had this problem with my current set up but I would recommend PTFE or similar quality AN hose instead of the solid aluminum or stainless in those areas.

Good Luck.

Also, check the integrity of your current motor mounts that could be your issue as well.

Like StocS2k said, it is probably the platform more than anything. Somewhere around 2200-3000 has a nasty vibration. I think the harmonics are just right for the motor and the 30lb weight hanging at a certain distance. On a different car (full-race style sidewinder) I took parts off the car until the vibration disappeared. Putting your hand on the turbo when it was vibrating felt like holding a palm sander. Disconnected the charge pipe....then the downpipe....the wastegate dumps. Nothing made a difference until I removed the turbo.

I did have better luck with the tube manifold (16ga.) and a hanging brace, but that eventually cracked too. It didn't have near the vibration a pipe manifold had though. There was a lot of flex in the tube manifold.

The sidewinder / f20 / f22 has the worst vibration on a setup I've ever dealt with. To be fair it probably sets the turbo away from the motor the furthest too.

Thanks for the kind words and feedback.

I concur about holding the turbo as the harmonics kick feeling like a palm sander. This is most likely NOT a mount issue.

Going to go over my exhaust for any contacts and after revalidate the vibration.

Making me reconsider certain things I usually do for reliability.

Has anyone had any luck dampening this issue? Perhaps with an improved crankshaft damper?

Might start our own build thread, as I really like being able to follow through over time.

I have a fluidampr pulley and couldn't tell a difference with anything really. You should make a build thread, we can always use more.

Got the oil drain sorted out. Had to modify the old fitting and it gets tight between the compressor elbow and the #1 runner.

Started on the downpipe since my turbine outlet flange came in. I went ahead and ground the housing to fit the 3.5" vband better. There was about a .125" step from the turbine to the exhaust that was ground out.

Shortened the downpipe flange and tacked it to the first elbow.

Downpipe shouldn't be too bad to make. I want to fit a vband near the engine mount so I can remove the top side of the downpipe without getting under the car.

Wow. Im super surprised you got a 3.5" downpipe to fit. Mine is a front mount mani with a 3.5" Dp and it is piecut city to make it fit. There was an article motoiq did on the affects of a 3 vs 3.5 vs 4" downpipes on a supra, I know its a little bit like comparing apples to oranges but they made massive gains at the same boost level going from a 3" to 3.5" at the 700hp level. Going from 3.5 to 4" it was much less of a gain, mainly just decreased spool time
