How do the AEM pencil coils stack up to the smart coils? I was hoping the pencil coils would be good for 1000 whp. I'd rather run them if I can for a cleaner install similar to the stock look.

Carey, are they plug and play or do you need a driver for them? I think the S uses a 3 wire but could be mistaken, so not sure how the 2 wire AEM pencil coils will work. Can you elaborate on it for me please?

You'll need a coil driver. Part #30-2840

Got it! Thanks man.
That's nice to know, thank god I didn't spend that money. What would be my best bet for S/C 400whp+ E85? Just wondering as the very first start of the day always takes a few tries then it fires right up the rest of the time. I know I'm not running anything super crazy like some but it's a great street car and always looking for the best for my setup. Will most likely go turbo soon. Thanks for the help much appreciated
The stock coils, with low miles/usage, will easily work at 800 whp on e85. At least my 16k mile original 02 coils did. At 400, you definitely wont have any issues with the stockers, as long as they are relatively lower mileage.
All great info here but what I want to know and hope they can chime in on is Kings performance and their stock ignition claims. I have spoke with them several time and everytime they tell me that all their drag cars(900-1300hp) run stock ignition systems. How is this possible if so many people have issues getting to even 700-800 on stock coils? I am going for 1000whp myself and was thinking about doing the AEM smart coils like carey has but they told me it is not necessary... Playing devils advocate here... I know the AEM system will work for 1000hp but how the hell do you support 1000hp on stock ignition as they claim on all their cars?! Been boggling me for a year almost and never brought it up.
