What power are you making? The stock coils are good up to 600whp.

Was getting misfires up top. Found it to be the injector plugs. Once I fixed that, no more misfires. So I got rid of the AEM smart coils because they were just cluttering the engine bay. I was only making <500whp. If I were to go >1000whp, I may revisit the smart coils.

Anyways, I was able to run the smart coils with stock NKG gap with no misfires. Does it prove they provide a stronger spark? I dunno.

To get it working, you just need to splice into the signal wire of each coil and supply a switched 12v to the smart coil and provide proper grounding.
Custom cut msd wires to the spark plugs and used some old Honda spark plug rubber cap.

I'm making close to 600 on pump, but had electrical issues inducing a cut under boost so we couldn't continue tuning on C16. I'm ruling out major electrical components, next on the list are coils. The AEM coils look like a robust alternative. A little off-topic, someone told me that the AEM is preset to turn off the alternator under boost a(to reduce load on the engine?), is this something that is typically adjusted?

do you mean the AC compressor? our alternators do not have a clutch on them that can disengage the alternator. i really think you mean AC compressor.

I ask because the answer would help me diagnose if its the small Odyssey battery that is not able to keep up with the demand at high load.
As far as the alternator, even though there's no clutch to stop the rotor from moving, I think there's a way to regulate the field (voltage regulator?)and thus the load on the alternator. How would you get rid of excess energy, or how would you get additional current when installing bigger fuel pumps, sound systems, etc. if this wasn't possible?

Big ddifference between voltage and amperage.

Apparently there are two signals communicating to the alternator form the stock ECU (if I read correctly) that are not used with the AEM.

How do the AEM pencil coils stack up to the smart coils? I was hoping the pencil coils would be good for 1000 whp. I'd rather run them if I can for a cleaner install similar to the stock look.

read post #11 in this thread. and to add to that, they are not long enough and you need to use a circuit board standoff on the plug to extend the top of it...same thing with the cbr coils if used on the s2k.

The pencil coils will be fine around 1000hp. We ran them in that power range with success. The long AEM pencil coils fit perfect on an F20/22 engine.

Awesome!

Carey, are they plug and play or do you need a driver for them? I think the S uses a 3 wire but could be mistaken, so not sure how the 2 wire AEM pencil coils will work. Can you elaborate on it for me please?
