Why doesn't anything like that happen when you run out of gas?
because when you run out of gas there is NO FUEL, not just enough to ignite and explode

Hey my car was running very lean with a BAD TPS, and on some cars it takes a while for the related CEL to come on, check the voltage .45v at idle 4.5v at WOT

Detonation is more related to timing than Afr's, and is allways bad. You can detonate with good afr's and you can also detonate with poor afr's. However if you are detonating with poor afr's you are more likely to damage the engine. Detonating with rich condition while still bad, is better because the rich afr will burn at a lower temp than the lean condition. This is one of the reasons why it is wise to run at 10 to 11 afr under boost. If detonation does accidently, occur due to bad fuel or over boost, then you are alittle safer.

Thats right.

Sorry I dont have a pic of mine. Most likely is located near your clutch resivor. and is about the size of your fist. Mine is a Comptech brand and has an adjustable threaded post with a lock nut on top. The unit is billet aluminum.
