What the name of the tuner?
Tony at T1 Racing Development in Dallas was who tuned it; Not that what he did has anything to do with the busted engine

Once it is apart I'm sure well find out more. We also have planned to pull the tune off the AEM and send it to another tuner-friend to have him give it a once over and make sure nothing funny stands out. If anyone has anything else to chime in with because we're at a loss here. I think he plans to order the internals soon for the rebuild. Mahle pistons, BC rods, ACL bearings and APR headstuds is the plan (correct me if I'm wrong Frost.)

Its difficult to pinpoint what caused the detonation becuase there are half a dozen or more ways, assuming your tuner has taken in account your modifications and set things up appropriately. Making sure you are running a good afr in the 11-12 range and retarding timing appropriately to boost level and load/heat. Making sure all of your OEM systems are working properly is the first step. You can run too rich and cause detonation also, or fuel wash your pistons creating comp loss and bearing failure.

I'm a big proponent of water/meth... or just meth injection. It won't protect you against a fuel wash conditions, but depending on how its integrated into your tune it can add a significant safety barrier, protecting against typical unforeseen variables. You don't have to use it to make more power, but to run a good tune and then use it as a safety buffer, so if you ever do get a bad tank of gas or run too hot IAT you likely won't have detonation killing your motor.
Talk to me more about the meth...any recommended setup better than another? A little extra insurance on fresh built motor would nice.

So did you ever get a compression or leak down test?

You're saying power is still coming on strong despite the smoking right?

The car has absolutely no loss of power what-so-ever. As a matter of fact it pulls even harder (probably because he rarely drives is now that it smokes so it just feels that way). Literally everything works just like normal just smoke from the breather.

We (he, sfrost2287) kinda of skipped that step. Went more along the lines of 'go big or go home.' I know Mahle 9.5:1 Ø87.25 pistons, BC rods, ACL bearings and ARP head studs were all on the list of parts to order (maybe a new turbo, meth, and he's on the list for the new Lite-Spec full titanium exhaust). He was able to sell the coil-overs (Top Secrets shimmed by Aragosta) and find enough money to do the whole build

As far as I know the plan is to drop the engine, strip it down to the shot block and ship it out to 'wadzii' (whom I think he has been in contact with) to do all of the block work (bore, hone, deck, micro-polish crank, balance & blueprint ). Once it gets back well put it all back together and get it to Boost Logic in Austin to re-tune. The only things that I know is still up in the air is possibly getting a bigger turbo, and a meth kit

Still trying to decide on the meth kit and how/which one is best for the car, our goals and make sure it is 'tuning friendly.' A lot of people have the AEM kit but like most, there are mixed reviews. Single port / Direct port, jet size etc. So there is still a lot of learning and researching to do.

I will see him later on tonight and I'm sure well iron out the details. If ANYBODY has any ideas, questions, or comments please feel free to chime in were all still learning here!!

Hmm....sounds kinda suspect, especially if he's got a broken ring land. I mean how do you know the turbo isn't shot?

Smoking at idle, but doesn't do it when he drives. Does it smoke when the car is cold? Or only after warm up.

It smokes heavy at idle, lightly while driving, but the white smoke billows out of the exhaust while driving.

ya man I'll confirm the damage with the comp. and leakdown test, but the engine parts are paid for, the new turbo is paid for, and now I just have to break the motor down as g22lee stated, and send it to Superior Auto Tech to get fixed up and built. as far as the tune goes I may go back to T1 as it probably wasn't his fault. just a waiting game now and few hundred more dollars in parts.
