Alright guys another quick question, I've heard mixed responses from a few people, and my question is this: I understand that I need to resurface the head, but is it absolutely necesary that I get new Valve springs and retainers, and get the head potted and polished? I really am running a bit low on fundage, and if this work is not needed I would prefer to save a little cash.

No reason to do anything but surface the head. The head is great stock, no need to port it... or replace any valve train unless its got a ton of miles and a few over revs where you have been crossing your fingers. Replacing springs and keepers wouldn't cost much compared to the port job, if you do anything do this if it gives you piece of mind.
