Its oil vapor …which gives it a more white appearance. Its not exhaust where the oil is burnt and sent out the pipe looking blue.

the only thing Im worried about is not finding out what caused the problem, then when I pay all the money to get built it will just happen again...

Yeah absolutely…because it will very likely happen again if you don't figure this out. Looking at the tune would be first up. I'm always weary of running too rich due to my experiences with this problem, but it could be a different problem in your case. Explore all your options. It doesn’t sound like high mileage was a factor.

^ what are some common causes of detonation, and how do I find out exactly what caused the problem? could it be a faulty knock sensor or anything like that? I have thus far heard:

1: bad tank of gas
2: improper tuning once turboed
3: bad injectors
4: bad fuel pump

and a few others I think..

but how can I definitively find out EXACTLY what caused it?? Im just super nervous and afraid its gonna happen again after I dump gobs of money into the rebuild. Thanks guys

Its difficult to pinpoint what caused the detonation becuase there are half a dozen or more ways, assuming your tuner has taken in account your modifications and set things up appropriately. Making sure you are running a good afr in the 11-12 range and retarding timing appropriately to boost level and load/heat. Making sure all of your OEM systems are working properly is the first step. You can run too rich and cause detonation also, or fuel wash your pistons creating comp loss and bearing failure.

I'm a big proponent of water/meth... or just meth injection. It won't protect you against a fuel wash conditions, but depending on how its integrated into your tune it can add a significant safety barrier, protecting against typical unforeseen variables. You don't have to use it to make more power, but to run a good tune and then use it as a safety buffer, so if you ever do get a bad tank of gas or run too hot IAT you likely won't have detonation killing your motor.
