i am actually pretty sure i'm going to run another stock motor. i still haven't even decided if i'm going to run FI anymore. i'm very up in the air about everything and very open to suggestions for sure.

i think the idea of shavings in the head might be a little extreme, but i guess anything is possible. we'll see when i crack it all open!

[QUOTE=ThatPreludeGuy,May 15 2009, 06:31 AM]Anything I'm missing in details that should/could be important to these issues?

1. What year motor and how many miles at failure
2. What was the state of the motor at failure (i.e. NA, turbo, SC, etc

[QUOTE=ya@inlinepro,May 15 2009, 07:04 AM]Since this issue has come up so much I'd figure I'd throw in some information.

This is an article by a few magazines, with the help of CLEVITE, and BIG bearing manufacturer.

inline pro told me the head should be usable but its possible for the bearing material to make it up into the head

i guess the only way of knowing is actually pulling the motor apart and checking

are you thinking built bottom end or stock and reusing the 3mm hg?
If there is bearing material in your oil then it went threw your head also. It will be anywhere where oil is. No reason you wouldnt be able to reuse your head. Just have it cleaned by a machine shop.

motor came out yesterday. just sat down with all my tools to start getting the bottom end apart. just dropped the pan. here are a few pictures...

yup. those are my thrust washers at the bottom of the oil pan. excellent!!!

here they are out of the car. one looks good, the other looks pretty mangled. i would guess to say that the broken one was the one that was originally closer to the end of the motor - is that a safe assumption?

other than the washers in there the oil itself is actually perfectly clean - i can't find a single metal shaving in here.

looks like i should work on yanking the crank now.

Wow Mike...that sucks to see....I knew you were saying it was bad pre-tear down at the meet. Those things looked like they were eaten by that creature in the Twilight Zone.
