motor came out yesterday. just sat down with all my tools to start getting the bottom end apart. just dropped the pan. here are a few pictures...

yup. those are my thrust washers at the bottom of the oil pan. excellent!!!

here they are out of the car. one looks good, the other looks pretty mangled. i would guess to say that the broken one was the one that was originally closer to the end of the motor - is that a safe assumption?

other than the washers in there the oil itself is actually perfectly clean - i can't find a single metal shaving in here.

looks like i should work on yanking the crank now.
damn
how many miles again w/ the ACT clutch?

29k on the motor, 4k or so on that clutch, about 1k with this turbo setup. prior to this setup i was n/a for a little while, though i have jumped around with setups in the last summer.

i really think i felt the washers fall out on my way to the meet last week. it would totally explain my weird awkward pedal feel i felt very suddenly. i think the one broke and fell, the crank moved forward, and then the other one dropped as well. i have found a couple slivers of metal shavings in the oil pump mesh thing, but other than that everything looks to be clear and clean. if all my guesses are accurate, i only put about 30 miles on the car after the washers failed, so i'm very confident in the integrity of the head. it seems like this block just needs new washers, some machine work, and maybe a new crank.

i still think i'm going to do an F22C now.

ok! just cracked open the block. i took some pictures for all of you to see and comment on.

at first glance the bottom of the block looks to be alright...

but upon closer inspection there's all sorts of bad signs in here. lets look at all the journals first...

all of them look real nice until we get to the one where the thrust washers should be....

ouch!

the crank side looks a little better, but not by much. again, most of the crank looks decent until we arrive at the thrust washerless portion...

check out the massive scratches next to this journal... i found them everywhere along the bottom of the cylinder opening as well...

think that was caused by one of the washers breaking and flying upwards? if thats the case then im damn lucky they didnt go straight up into the cylinder!!!

questions comments and complaints are of course welcome - as are any extra motors you might have lying around.
