Never logged it. Maybe I will once the weather gets nicer. I can definitely tell it has made a difference though.

There's one other point I forgot..... probably only a concern in Cali for the most part and that is legality!

I've had a cop try to look into my hood vents to see my possible Turbo sitting inside..... due to the smaller rear vent he was unable to see it. Which was quite nice. It was also nice that he was such an idiot he didn't use the front inter-cooler as probable cause to have me pop my hood and send my car to the state referee where I'd have never been able to get it back from. CHP, silly meter maids with guns.
God I'm glad we dont have that problem here.... yet.

I think at this point they would just crush my car right on site, and I hope the tank of methanol in the trunk would blow up and engulf them in invisible flames as a result.

I logged it with AEM over and over and it greatly reduces temps in any condition. The biggest temp changes were after heat soaking in traffic of course as expected.

As far as a air intake near the vent, actually the vents allow air OUT so it could be worse technically. Mines under the first vent as I find my underhood temps so low that I don't care about the intake position much but for the record putting your intake under a vent just passes the air from all over the engine bay across it, could be worse or better.

I've done em both ways, the water is a moot issue. It is impossible for it to rain hard enough anywhere on earth to cause an issue for the intake, just becomes a little knock control if anything.

My intake is directly under my largest hood vent hole in the front and aimed upward slightly even. It's a foam/oil filter. It's been through pretty harsh rain storms here in Cali, harder rain than I've ever seen WA state have.... I know that sounds rather improbable.

A good point about the large vent you see in his picture towards the rear is that is the hottest point under hood on the S2K (I've done testing to find this as fact) which means it's the best place to put a vent of course if you wish to expel heat effectively. Thus I think it's a pretty good option for most, most effective for removing heat no doubt there as was already said.

There's actually 2 other configurations that can be done, not including the front very small triangle in the center which I've done only one time.

Probably at the end of the day, as you pointed out it comes down to what the owner prefers cosmetically. I prefer the one I did on my own but of course I'm just one owner of thousands.

Hood venting in general though is a fantastic option for any s2k owner.


Seeing as you seem to be the vent guru of these parts, maybe I can pick your brain a bit.

I have read through the DIY thread countless times, and have everything ready to go for my vent job.

Care to share your technique/ tools of choice.

I planned to use an air saw to cut the holes. What do you do to prevent paint peeling?

What do you use to feather the paint on the top side edges??
Snap-on body saw is what I use for the cutting process though just as of recently I may have myself a better way that will greatly lower costs and time.

I have pneumatic metal sheers as well, they're effective for the inner mesh.

Paint peeling is a problem only on older models for the most part. My advice is frog tape the topside of the hood and press it all down firmly for a few minutes. Keep the hood very warm, I heat the entire hood using forced air heated to 140 degrees continuously, remember it's aluminum so the heat dissipates nearly instantly when you pull the source away.

As for feathering the top, that depends greatly on the quality of the paint, I use different stones to finish the edge, a set of 10 does the job effectively. The first passes are done VERY light pressure. Then I slightly increase pressure and go to a more course grit to start removing material IF needed (such as old paint that has tiny chips on the cut), finally I head back to a very fine stone and then clay bar and buff away anything on the hood surface to finish the job.

You can paint match with the paint pens Honda sells for the edges but it's only needed on certain colors with certain color mesh options. Remember, again it's aluminum so at least rust isn't an issue.

The most difficult part is making the cut straight. If the cuts aren't incredibly straight you can be in for a LONG time of sanding to match the straights to the radius of the corners and to get it all straight. I suppose it all comes down to how picky one is but I can spot a quality vent job vs a cheesy one even at a distance.

Actually I found that my cordless ryobi jigsaw with a metal cutting blade from home depot goes through the hood like a hot knife through butter. I was able to redo each cut as many times as I wanted until they were perfect. It would ever turn without forward motion to change direction. Super easy and fun too...

This is probably what you are looking for. The owner wanted the biggest vent above the header to maximize the amount of heat out of the engine bay. Functionality first, look is a far second. He liked it so much he brought his brand new 370Z next for me to vent.

Jigsaws on some hoods will cause massive paint damage. Watched a fellow member gut his hood up pretty good using one.... eeek! It's also a little harder to work with and make first pass perfect cuts with consistency. More I just avoid it because it's rougher on the hood but hey if it worked out for you then great!!

Not all paint is created equal, newer cars seem to be much more forgiving.
