Can you even do the 1-4 dog box and use the stock 5-6? Isn't the dog box 4th gear close to the same ratio as the stock 5th gear?

My current 5speed gearbox in the s2k has 1-4 dog, 5th and reverse have synchro.

It makes it a bit easier on the street than a full dog system.

Most of the time it should be fine. I read the traffic eg at traffic light or during peak hour and expect when I will need to put the stick back into 1st. I just depress the clutch pedal before I get to move and give the input shaft time to slow down before I put it into 5th.

On rare occasion, when the light suddenly turns green or something that I need to grab first gear urgently (from neutral), I depress the clutch, just rest the stick half way into 5th and use the 5th synchro to slow down the input shaft. Then I chuck it into first. This way I won't damage the 1st dog/dog ring.

5th (or reverse) synchro is cheap compare to the dog ring

I am no gearbox expert/ engineer. However 5th and 6th are next to each other so it is doable unless the 1-4th gears are wider than the stock gears and doesn't allow enough room for the oem 5th and 6th.

The gear ratio can be custom order

Okay, I have a few questions as I am no expert on transmissions

(1) What parts fail in our transmissions?
(2) When the failures occur is it attributed to launching the car or extended loading from hard acceleration?
(3) Has anyone tried, heat treateatment, case hardening……. To the parts that fail?
(4) What about just buying the parts that are prone to failure from a company like PPG for a cheaper alternative?

From my experiences with this trans, I never broke one launching, I broke 2 2nd gears just rolling into the throttle.

But I'm sure it's just a domino effect. Once you beefed that up, it's on to the next weakest link in the trans

Yes I lost 2nd in one box and another gearbox was noisy after a launch which broke an axle as well.

The second gear was stripped clean of it's teeth. I have not open up the noisy gearbox to see what's wrong.

The corvette version is a transaxle, but the ones used in Mustangs, G8, Camaro SS, and Challengers are a standard type transmission. It doesn't negate the need for a new bellhousing or adapter plate though...
