Default Driveshaft Question

Hey guys,

When replacing the transmission in the S2000 the other day, I found out that the plate which bolts the transmission to the driveshaft was stripped out.

I'm not sure if it happened when I was removing the tranny, or whether it was the last transmission.

Regardless, I was only able to get three bolts (swapped in true grade 8) back in the mount tight and the fourth was only finger tight (wouldn't catch the stripped hole).

The mechanic who was helping me do the install indicated that he didn't think the driveshaft was OEM, but I'm not entirely sure. I don't think that the previous owner installed an aftermarket driveshaft, but wasn't sure if there were even other driveshaft options for the car.

Because of all of this, I'm wondering if the three bolts with a finger tight fourth is strong enough (which I doubt), and if not, how can I go about finding the correct adapter plate to replace it with? Would the part from the dealership be correct, or am I out to lunch and in need of custom fabrication.

The reason I ask is because I'm supposed to be getting the car retuned on Monday, but I'm concerned about putting the car on the dyno as is.

Aidan

I just heard back from the previous owner who indicated that the shaft was manufactured by the driveshaft shop.

The shop that installed my clutch left one of the bolts out. Took it to the dyno that way, and did plenty of 3rd/4th gear runs afterward... I'm at 326whp though, not sure if you're higher.

Another shop noticed it during an inspection (trying to find my missing 3.3psi and 74whp) and put the last bolt in for me. FYI, they use a seriously long extension (like 2 feet long or more) to tighten those because it forces you to hold everything at the right angle, preventing stripping. An interesting approach.

The driveshaft is balanced. When the torque on the different bolts are off a lot, the driveshaft will no longer be balanced when spinning.

At least thats how I see it. I could very well be wrong too.

I think I'm going to get a machine shop t tap a couple of hellacoils into the plate tomorrow?

According to the DSS, that should be stronger than the plate originally was.
