Default Engine Management

Hi there,

I am investigating FI, and here in Ireland there are very few places (if any) who can advise on this for the S2000.

I have been offered a Vortech system with an HKS VPRO management system, i haven't this system mentioned often in these forums, everyone seems to run the AEM EMS.

Is this something i need to be wary of, why have most chosen the AEM model? Are there limitations of the HKS?

Thanks for your time,

Chris

I've heard some good things about the HKS, but the problem is finding someone good to tune the HKS System. The AEM is easier and also much more common so finding a tuner to tune an AEM EMS will be easier.

Maybe someone can chime in who has had some first hand experience with the HKS...

But with that not only do you have to consider finding someone local that can tune that system, but also cost. It is a high end and very versatile system but its as the saying goes... You gotta pay to play. The system itself will be fairly costly and then anyone who tunes it will probably charge more than what other tuners will charge to tune say an AEM system.

Are you referring to the HKS F-con V pro?
I was under the impression that it uses the same GEM's board as the EMS? I would say go with the AEM, it is supported more tuning wise.

HKS Fcon V Pro requires tuning by authorized HKS dealers/tuners. 90% of the HKS dealers out there can not install, tune, or even service this system. That theoretically ensures high quality and a good tune, but can also mean sky high prices.

The AEM EMS is sold by every AEM dealer out there and can be 'tuned' by any idiot with a laptop. The key here is finding the right idiot who won't blow up your car and can actually do what he claims. Most AEM tuners are not going to provide you with the best possible tune. Be very careful about your choice of tuner. I would ask to ride in traffic in some heavily modified cars that he has tuned. Many of them do good work at WOT, but it all falls apart at part throttle, idle, startup, elevation, and/or temperature changes.

Both of these systems are plug and play. Anything that isn't plug and play, is simply silly in my opinion. The cost outweighs any perceived or real benefits of the other systems.

Gotta love completely unsupported opinions.

The Motec is a great system but the requirements to fit it to an S2000 are phenomenal. I suspect most people who recommend it have not done it.

The beauty of the AEM is plug and pray, I mean play. Set up is minimal, it does everything you need and has all the optional extras you would pay many thousands of dollars (or pounds) for. Only cavaet is the temperature gauge. You'll need Modifry's ECT to drive it.

That said, if this Vortech is a secondhand system and the HKS is set up for it with all the looms ready to go then it would be an ideal starting point. Tuning would be more like tweaking. But be aware many JDM tuning systems require special licensed software and have passwords. If the HKS is like this and you don't get all the licenses then steer clear.
Yes definitely not plug and play... I wasn't specific with my statement about the Motec systems being too expensive but yea thats one major reason they aren't cost effective for the most part...

Very good systems, just not worth the cost and hassle of finding someone to work with it for most people.
