Default Knock...How will I know

Going in in two weeks for another tune to make the car a little more aggressive after changing a woodruff key and changing a header. Anyway, since my Emanage does not log knock, outside of the thing knocking like crazy and hearing all of it what would any other signs be?

I have read of people logging knock on a tune with their engine management, but unless it was really bad and I could hear it is there something else I can look for?

Will it stutter under boost? I don't think it would throw a misfire code.?.?

I have read a few posts about people with aggressive tunes grenading an engine and since I can't log knock to monitor the tune when the guy is done with it just wondering if there is some other signs to look out for. The tuner has a fantastic reputation, has many years under his belt, and I will let him know I want a decent safety margin, but like to be on top of things with the car.

Thanks,

john

The gemu can log knock if you wire it up although it's not brilliant.

The car will hesitate/hit a soft wall as the stock knock sensor will kick in, unfortunately you have no control of the knock functions but it won't be a problem.

You can use a copper pipe and rubber tubing for some homemade det cans. Its cheap and works well. I use a phormula knock device now, but i used to have good results with homemade knock detection.

Put my Mugen header back on (not too aggressive because I still have stock exhaust) I moved the exhaust cam 2 degrees to reduce overlap and my AP1 pulley that came with the kit is 8 lbs of boost, although the peak hold feature on my gauge will show as high as 8.8 on my setup.

I just remember a quote from my old MR2 board that was something like "Your car will never feel faster than right before you melt a piston" and I am fearful of "Your car will never feel faster than right before your blow off your rings." Just want to make sure that if it is knocking a bit, I will be able to tell. The tuner is trusted, but I am paranoid with my car.

There is a huge area under the curve where my VTEC is moved but timing not advanced much that will probably yield a lot of power. I am still amazed though how at the level I have compared to most of you turbo guys, how it will spin the wheels in the low gear with a little throttle, especially in corner. Just a bit of throttle and it drifts pleasantly on a low speed turn.

I think if these SOT's had come out before Comptech or Vortech there would be a million of em. Shooting for about 320-330 at the wheels with about 230-240 torque across nearly the whole range.

Camu, how is the new guy doing with your kit?

i love that quote. similar to your not going fast unless your breaking things!

timing is weird thing. two ways to tune it from what i read. keep raising it until MBT then keep it high, or progressively raise it to max timing at max boost. when we tuned my s2k on the 8psi i tuned it like the first way just on dumb luck. mase retuned it with the second way and made more power. not saying its the better way, but been using that way ever since. new setup is this way too. car runs super strong. it feels slow though, cause its what i have had for years now. just had a little baby girl, and getting married in august so money being spent on the car is not an option lol. perhaps, if things allow, next year finannly make the jump to e85 and new injectors. i just want 500-550 whp. is that too much to ask ROFL.

good luck with the tune. on 8psi i was in the 330range at the wheels. its been awhile since i looked at those dynos. i do miss the instant power. that part was so damn nice! dont go past 8psi though, the blower just doesnt like it. i saw very minimal gains for what i stressed on that car. 15whp is not worth 2psi more, meth, water, blah blah all that stuff.

though, i have my eye peeled on the thread about the tvs blower. damn them.

The new guy is finally getting tuned in a couple of months. I have a 2.4 stroker with the SOT kit. Cannot wait.
