Looks like the begining of the End :(

I'm not too sure if its normal for high hp boosted S's. I just know it happened to me also. I made a thread a while back when I first had it happen to me but never really got an answer on it. I just basically kinda figured out what was causing the problem and that was banging 5th and 6th gears. Since I stopped that, it hasnt happened again. I'd like to know if more people with 550+ whp have also experienced the problem or not. Its definitely weird and I have no clue as to what is actually causing the lockout. I'm just assuming its the over heated stress put onto the single synchro's when we are trying to shift very quickly with a ton of power. At first, I thought I bent a shift fork or something but I dont slam gears hard, I just shift very smooth and very quickly. When the gears came back, I assumed the problem was just the single synchro's and shifting too fast with that much power.
I took a buddy out in his 490 whp boosted S a couple weeks to show hime how to race it and shift very fast and smooth without banging gears too hard to the point of hurting things. He about shit himself when he realized how much faster his car was with me driving it.
He is a pretty slow shifter though. We raced a 475 whp civic and he kept losing by about 3 cars and I said, let me drive it for you and I guarantee it wont lose. Well, we raced again with me driving and i pulled the civic by about 2 cars. He was so stoked and flipping out. I'm trying to teach him how to drive the gears without ruining things but still win races and be fast.

This has happened on stock s2k's with damaged synchros. The 5th and 6th synchros are 'connected' and when you scratch 6th, it can affect 5th. It the old issue of skip shifting 1st to 2nd and 3rd, then going straight to 6th. The reason you were locked out of 5th was probably because the cones were damaged and something got stuck in the collar, preventing you from entering the gear. After a bit of driving and getting into 6th you dislodged whatever was in the 5th gear collar and were then able to mesh with the gear. No doubt this was power related, so you might want to go a bit easier on the shifting, ie trying to not let the rev drop too much in-between shifts, double clutching and not skip shift. This of course doesn't include any remedies from too much power. Good luck joey! You might want to change the fluid as well and see if there are any bits of brass.
is this a WOT in gear problem, or just with shifting quickly while getting on it?
also is my transmission permanently F------? Maybe I do shift harder then I thought. The problem is redline comes up so fast with the 'ol twinscroll
I'll keep you posted on how mine turns out..I haven't beat on it to bad, if I go into 5th it's very brief, I LOVE acceleration, but not going 120+, to unsafe for me (pussy I guess).
Anyway, I use GM syncromesh in my tranny, carryover from my FWD days.

can you describe/video what is the best way to shift to avoid damage to our trannies?
Basically, when I am hammering on it, I start in 2nd gear with brake boosting to full boost of about 17 psi. Let off the brake and it launches with throttle to the floor. Once I hit about 9300 rpm, this is where the shifting gets real quick and smooth, I let off the throttle completely and depress the clutch all the way to the floor at the exact same time real fast, shift to 3rd very quickly but smooth without slamming the shifter and release the clutch very fast and punch the throttle to the floor again at the exact same time. All so quick and smooth that my buddy said he didnt even feel that we were shifting any gears in his car when I raced it for him. He said it was like an automatic tranny.
And so on and so forth to 4th gear. Once I get to 5th, I just slow the shifting down a bit and hold the clutch in a split second longer to give the synchro's time to slow the gears down.

I would rule out the long drives or "heat" as the culprit
I drove from Atlanta to eastern Iowa in 2 days. And did some 4th gear pulls myself on the trip
. I didn't have any tranny issues till I got back home... Towards the start it sounded like it may have been an axle (snapped one of mine). I know my 1-2 syncro is gone... Is double clutching really a solution to a bad syncro? I was afraid of completely trashing it if I tried. having to come to a complete stop to shift into 1st is a major PITA
. Also annoying when driving in a city. I live 20 miles away from any city larger than 1000 ppl... Good luck finding a fix or a fresh tranny.DFWs2k your vid. And no this isn't me:
double clutching
I am going to try double clutching if its good for the tranny while I am driving hard. Honestly it's my own fault I have been very hard on 5th gear, thats where I have done most of my pulls...........
Thanks guys I keep you updated and try double clutching.
Just for my knowledge, double clutching is not going to wear down anything else is it? Like my clutch? and can I double clutch on both up & downshifts?
God I sound like such a nooberoni
