Replacing stock ECU to Pass Emissions
Hey guys,
I've been searching the threads and haven't really found a clear answer about smog emissions testing. It's probably because some members aren't specific about their situation.
I will be moving to Nevada and they do not do a visual for smog. They do, however, plug into the OBD2 port. I'm running AEM for my UR turbo setup. I have 1000cc injectors and upgraded resistor pack. No cats.
I have thought about replacing the AEM with the stock AP1 ECU before coming to get tested. Would this work out or would I get a cell for having larger injectors? Or do I have to find someone with a brain.
Thanks
HVD
It depends what smog place you go to. Ive had some that just plug the obd scanner in and pass me on a no cel basis. Other shops will do the old fashion sniffer test. Either way if it has cel's or is running rich during the test they will fail you. I use the emanage ultimate and have never had a problem passing.
You will get a cel and the car may not even run with those big injectors and box...
Also the stock ecu must be ran for over 100 miles ( I think) with no codes recorded to be able to pass..

Car will not run with 1000 cc injectors and stock ecu. Would have to change injectors, put stock coils on and drive for long enough to reset readiness codes on old ecu. Major PITA.
If u plan on staying in a place that smog checks, might check out KPro. I am using it for this reason.

You will have to:
switch back to stock ECU
Remove resistor box and switch back to stock injectors
Make sure stuff like your air pump is still hooked up (a lof of people remove this when going turbo and stand alone).
Since you have no cat you will need something like a test pipe with an o2 fix to space the factory o2 sensor out far enough not to trigger a CEL with the factory ecu. You might just be able to get away with some spark plug antifoulers.
You will also fail visual inspection for no cat, they are SUPPOSED to look under the car for that.
You will probably also need something like a missing link or a 1 way valve to keep your stock map sensor (oh yes, you will be returning to your stock map sensor as well if you have upgraded) from seeing boost, otherwise the ECU will flip out.
It's gonna be a pain.
