Well I go out to do some under the hood stuff the other day and see that my brand new (less than 200 miles) turbo setup is rusting? Just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue and if so what do you do to keep it at a minimum?

I got the following suggestions from Full Race:

• spray a light mist of WD40 on it from time to time
• spray a mist of sharks hide (might be expensive, might not hold up at temp?) also suggested to research rust removal and prevention chemicals on knife collector websites
• spray paint on high temp VHT clear coat
• fancy high temp clear coat (http://www.summitrac...CFSHNOgodqVoASQ)

BBQ paint, about 7-10 coats. Cheap and effective.

 

That's really strange. Normally there might be a little rust on the exhaust housing because it's cast iron. But I never seen that much rust especially on the compressor back plate which should be Alumium.

I think just about any high temp paint can be sprayed there to protect it. I know the Neeman did that with his turbo. He covered the center section and the hotside turbine housing.

 

It's probably because of the vented hood, I have the exact same problem. First rain came in and rusted like a mofo.

 

On the EFR, the compressor backplate is integrated with the center housing and is therefore the same iron stuff. Yeah, iron stuff center housing/backplates will rust like a mofo.

 

Do you park your car outside or in a garage? Driven in the rain? My BW turbo looks brand new (on the car for 4 months now; no coating/etc).

 

I park it outside and drive it all the time, rain, snow what ever. I have sent an email to KBS Coatings to see what product they would recommend. I would rather not take it off and spray it...but if that is what I have to do...then so be it. It's butt ugly, but its not like somebody can see it at 80mph...lol

 

lol Yeah. It's cosmetic; nothing to worry about (from a structural/functional standpoint).
