The turbo is just one key to the overall performance of the car. The turbos now are differnet from the ones just a few years ago same for the kits. Most people use a gt30 gt35. A few kits are now using the 5758 and many people like the 6262 and the new 6265. You also need to focus on the kit and the type of performance you want. How any upgrades you gonna do and the amount of psi you want to run. Perfomance of the turbo is gonna be dependent on the kit you use it with.

Here's a good place to start on turbo knowledge:

I also recommend using this. This site also hosts the compressor maps for all of their turbos.

I've only use Turbonetics and Garrett for the last 10 years but Garrett have failed on me a few times and never any problems with Turbonetics.
That's why my favorite is easy, add the GT-K and there's no match.

Seems like 99% of this board love/use Garrett, is that because they come in the turbo kits or other reasons?

Don't kill me, I don't want to start a war here (out numbered).

That's why... I swapped a GTK for a Garret of the same wheel size and A/R (not even the new GTX Garret) and it destroyed it in every possible way. That was actually at a lower boost too, I can't remember the exact numbers but it was at least 15% more efficient (map/emap).

I haven't tried them but I would have to say there is no match for the GTX Garret's.

That's a good reason. I've seen the opposite comparing Turbonetics to Garrett but a few years back, never used Garrett since then.

Is the general consensus out there that Turbonetics turbos are the more reliable choice albeit with a sacrifice to power vs a comparable Garrett then?

Not really, some people have luck with Garrett and some with Turbonetics. I got a friend using Precision every time, all about taste and how your old turbo's treated you.
I guess you get favorites after a few years of turbo abuse.

As long as people pick a good brand it will work, can't stand the ebay ones and that's also from testing them and checking out the quality.

For me it looks like this:

200-380hp:

Mitsubishi TD04 from 13T to 19T, probably the best turbo on the market, will last 200.000+ miles, small and have internal WG and BOV for easy fit on most cars. Great spool up.

380hp and up:

Turbonetics GT-K series, I always buy one size bigger than needed because of the turbine limit but love everything about it.
