Default "Used" Turbo Build Thread

I've been looking at the Greddy turbo since I've had my S and have been all over the place with staying NA or going FI. I pulled the trigger on a used kit a few weeks ago and when I say "used" I mean I'm probably going to upgrade a lot of parts. This thread is basically the experience I've had since purchasing the turbo and resourcing all the right parts. This can also serve as a guide for all the first time FI guys/gals to get the right parts or similar to help them with their build. This is my first time so we'll be learning as we go!

I've compiled a Google Excel sheet of the list of parts, cost, links, descriptions all organized. It's a LIVE list so as I update you can see if you're interested. If you see anything that I can change, feel free to link me to a better product or explain

@swolepanda_s2k Turbo Build Google Excel Sheet

The goal? To make reliable power and used supporting mods that IF I do upgrade(which seems like the norm with the Greddy kit), I already have supporting mods there.

Used Greddy Turbo Kit came with: Greddy turbo(duh), PFAB manifold, Oil Relocation, Greddy Intercooler, BOV, Hot/Cold Side Piping, Downpipe, TIAL External Wastegate. You saw that external wastegate huh? The turbo came with the internal wastegate welded shut. I've heard of people wanting or trying to do this but haven't seen the results/data. This wont be emissions compliant being that I'm in CA but I found a Greddy CARB sticker on eBay and couldn't help myself. It's suppose to be...ironic?? haha

So you can imagine the list of parts that I'm about to plunge into. You can go into the Google Sheets to see everything I've purchased (highlighted green). As of now, none of the parts have been installed. I will be doing the install myself since Greddy has great installation instructions. I'll explain the upgraded components as I go along with the install. I'll most likely be sharing the progress in my Instagram as well @swolepanda_s2k

In the meantime, here's the build where it currently stands

Here’s what we’re working with so far. I have everything listed on the excel sheet except for injectors(delivery signature was required and I wasn’t home) and gauges.

I’m starting by stripping all the paint from the intercooler piping and sanding it down. Haven’t decided on painting it or polishing. Also removing all the rust from the downpipe and manifold for heat wrap and high temp paint.

Make you doc public; when it comes to being legal in CA the sticker will only take you so far; it really depends on the cop. Most will just issue you a state ref ticket others won't care it will come down to officer donuts and how he is feeling. Also what for you did; if you are street racing or being reckless more likely to get all of the tickets

As for making it carb legal it will also depend if you are running a test pipe [Won't pass but you will make more power]
I would run a test pipe and switch over to a cat when you go to smog if that's an issue. I passed with a high flow cat it won't pass visual but it will smog even tho it says it's not legal.

If you are running there e manage or a piggy back solution I'm sure you can tune the car to get it to pass; it might not pass a visual but many smog shops don't really check as we are obd2 and they just put in a sniffer and go by the numbers
This will depend on you smog place; but I'm going to follow this thread as I had a greedy turbo kit before on my civic and I really liked it; it wasn't fast but it was fun.

Also can you make your doc public and talk about how you plan to tune the car; ie
E manage, Greddy Piggy Back, AEM EMSv2 as us AP1 boys have to do alot to get flashpro to work.
What injectors and fuel pump are you going with?

Didnt realize it wasn't public. You should be able to see it now. I'm sure I'll get some hassle at some point with state ref. I've gotten a state ref for "Excessively loud exhaust" before. Its almost inevitable in California.

I'm going to be using AEM Infinity and tuning at Church. I've heard good things about Shawn's tuning skills. For injectors I went with 1300cc ID that are e85 compatible and a walbro 450 with the wiring and bracket kit from SOS. Everything is in the excel sheet and I'll be updating as I go.

Wow you are really putting a lot of money into this build excited to see some numbers. As you are doing a custom kit; might make sense to do a tubular or front facing manifold as this rate as others have posted really good results from upgraded from a long to different style.

For tuning
I'm sure ap1 chief will also come and say he can tune your car with AEM his prices are fair for a e tune. I have never used him but others on the forums have looks like good results from what I can tell.
Church is local to you as you are in LA would be idea you are looking at 550 for a AEM tune from him

Just another option for gauges
I was thinking of doing this

with the
https://www.scienceofspeed.com/index...can-gauge.html
This works great with the AEM and you could even load it up on your phone or get a touch screen single den HDMI output or VGA output and have more gauges there
There are so many options so it's up to you; I just thought 1 gauge to rule them all.

The good thing about turbo is your exhaust note will be much quieter. I run a q300. It was unbearable when I was N/A. With a turbo in front of it, car is super quiet. The motor/turbo is louder than the exhaust.

Some tips i would add: spray the silicone header wrap spray before and after applying the titanium wrap.(applying it before helps the wrap not 'slip' off the exhaust pipes. Also highly reccomend installing the aem infinity ecu with fuel pump and injectors before going turbo. Get it running just NA. Then when everything looka good add the turbo and start tunning it with forced induction. Adding so much at once makes it hard to diagnose if an issue pops up. Solid list btw.

I would do a front facing manifold but the benefit of the downward mount is to keep temps down. I want to test the setup on the track once everything is all set. I'm sure with the heat wrap and turbo blanket it'll help keeping temps down. Might do an oil cooler down the road.

I'll definitely hit up apchief! That could help not having to tow the car 50 miles to church.

Exactly what I was thinking for gauges. BTI multigauge is similar to gaugeART but has more customization with a splash screen (for scene points) https://www.inductionperformance.com...aem-infinity-1. Thats the beauty of Infinity is the CAN functionality and being able to do multi-channel gauges.

Yeah my buddy said he doesn't get much trouble from cops because his turbo quiets it down. Hopefully the bov won't give it away either lol

I'm gonna spray some high temp VHT on the downpipe before as well just to prevent future rust. I hate the look of rusted turbines and downpipes lol

I was thinking about this. Just doing and e85, infinity, injectors and pump install. That's hella $$$ at just tuning and dyno'ing. But the diagnosis part would help a lot.
