Default Vortech SC need help? (safe mode?)

Heres the deal, I've been reading this forum for about 5 months. Awhile ago i heard people talking about Vortech Supercharged S2000's hitting Safe Mode. With that the car wont go over 3000 rpm's period... My car just started doing this today... Why? i have no clue.... I tried to go back and find the forums and the pages on this. But i can't seem to find them... Can anyone help me out... Could it be the black box or the map sensor??? I don't know where to start but my car wont let me rip on it Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... Thank You all ! ! ! --- James

Chances are the wiring conections to the Timing controller are bad, all the splices need to be good low resistance conections. Don't use the fold over crimp connectors Vortech provides, they are well known for causing problems.

Either solder and heat shrink, or heat shrink/and crimp butt connectors.

Lucky you! I am still battling against my 3000 rpm ceiling. I am getting ready to remove my black box and run 100 octane to see if that is the cause.

Anyone know for a fact how much timing retard the Split Second box included in the VT kit has? I have heard that it is a maximum of 3 degrees and it starts at 6000 rpm. Is this an accepted fact or actual fact or just a rumor?

Thanks for the help.

That sounds about right. Three degrees at the top.

It's fact, As I'm the one who posted it originally. That's the data that came out of my Timing controller as provided by Vortech.

So here'e my little scheme...if the box supplied by Vortech is safe to run at sea level with 91 octane taking out 3* it should be safe at 2800+ ft with 91 octane taking out no timing right? Maybe mix in a little 100 octane for good measure. Anyone think this is a good idea? I think i will just go with a 50/50 91/100 blend and give it a try.

It's a maybe. Without logging the Knock sensor output you won't know. The engine makes enough noise in VTEC you'll probalby never hear it knock unless it's detonating it's brains out.

Run at your own risk.

OK so I pulled the box out and reconnected the wiring harness. Voila! I have my 3K RPM back again! It seems to be running just fine on 91 at 3000+ ft elevation in 95* temps.

I also haven't got any other engine codes that were popping up with the box connected. Seems that little bugger is more trouble than it's worth...for those higher than sea level and running 91 octane anyway.
