Default best way to lower "S"

I'd like to lower my 04 about an inch. Is this possible without compromising the handling? Can you just install different springs or do you need to use different shocks like Koni yellows? I believe you can lower about an inch with Konis.

An alignment is all that is needed after putting on lowering springs? I got the impression that lowering the car with lowering springs causes other problems. Like overworking stock shocks or in some way hurting the handling. I love the look but don't want to mess up the handling because I want to track the car (HPDEs)
