The officer didn't take prints? Isn't that "Obstruction of Justice" or something like that on his part? That's a bunch of BS. Granted, the odds of fingerprints actually determining the offender is small, but that's still his responsibility. I would've asked to speak to his superior and made sure that it was done. Then, I would ask for a copy of the report in a couple of weeks and make sure that they actually ran the prints for analysis.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.
Most police departments don't dust for fingerprints for crimes like this. Dusting is reserved for serious felonies like murder, robbery etc. I don't think you will find a dusting kit in your average patrol car and chances are your local police department only has a few people trained to lift prints.

I hope they catch the low-lifes who did this to you. I've had my car messed with too in the past and would have paid twice the amount of damage they did to my car to have just five minutes alone with the perp(s) and a baseball bat.

what i did is to take the money for the softtop repair, which was aboue 2-3 grand total.
and bought a hardtop.... if you only have small damages you can just put a patch inside and a silicon-glue the outside or something. i had mine fixed at a local upholstery place and they take care of many many softtops... my damage was actually pretty huge since the F*CKING piece of shits had to get into the car to take the seats out... but it's been fixed and even if it looks kinda bad, there's no problem with practicality... and i have a hardtop now too!

so....

good luck

Report the officers laziness to his supervisor. They should have dusted.

I seriously doubt that it is due to laziness, more like policy. I urge you to contact his supervisor and he will probably tell you the same thing. I don't think any police department will dust for fingerprints for such a petty crime. (I know it may seem like a horrific crime, but in the grand scheme of things it isn't) They aren't going to dispatch a forensics team and break out the crime scene tape for this one.
