Saving a babied Ap1. Moonrock Content FINALLY inside :)
Some people sand down the clear with 2000 grit after getting their car painted and get a coat of clear sprayed on. Supposedly it makes it look super wet. If the shop is offering to reclear and you haven't sanded through to the basecoat any where, go for it. You might not have to wet sand it after a coat or two more of clear.
BTW, I just wanted to add that you're crazy for using those discs. Don't take this wrong, but it sounds like you lack experience in wet sanding. One wrong move with those discs and you can cut through the clear easily. It might save time, but I wouldn't risk it. Get a long sanding block and do it by hand. Sand horizontally and constantly dry the panel and check your work. If the orange peel isn't that bad, start with 2000 grit. If most of the panel is matte, and only some shiny spots are visible, move up to finer sand paper. Honestly, I wouldn't even use 1500, unless you have. serious orange peel.
blixhavn and rev9komg, I totally agree with you guys.
Crazy, yeah I am. I didn't sand through clear coat yet, but I might
. But I do have a bit of past experience ( Just a bit ) so I am not totally new to this. I did have the idea of wetsanding down the car before throwing clear on, but it just didn't go right and didn't have time etc.
Btw rev9k, I had seen an e36 m3 get painted, wetsanded before clear than clear coated. Couldn't believe the outcome.
Now that you guys have said it, I might as well just sand it down. Get all the orange peel out, pretty much no shiny spots and then reclear it. That should come out real nice. Then wetsand with 3k grit and 4k grit WITHIN the time time frame that PPG suggests, coz I waited too long for this and it wooped my ass
, got too hard.

s2katTracks, thanks for your interest. And in fact, just got some updates today
After almost two weeks of 0% progress and driving it looking like crap, I https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/919...st__100finally continued the wetsanding project.
Did not have a camera at school, so no in progress shots
But here is my Satin Moonrock AP1

The whole car has an even satin finish to it, minus the tight spaces etc which I couldn't get with my DA. I'm going to take care of those by hand.
Did a quick test spot on the rear quarter panel, came out pretty much like a mirror with 0 orange peel. But need to work on the swirls since the rotary buffer is notorious for doing that, and DA isn't strong enough to cut all the paint.

Part of quarter panel buffed out, while door etc are all just 4000grit wetsanded.

The trunk looks shiny, but just from an angle.
The paint right now, has a matte finish to it when right in front of the eye. But if seen from an angle, it looks like its buffed out. That is because the whole surface is as flat as a mirror, 3000k wetsanding FTW. And 4000k OVERKILLL, but I still did it

A DIY Satin Finish via Wetsanding Tutorial?? ? ?? ??

This, by far, is my favourite picture since it shows the satin-mirror finish transition. Top part was straight in front of the camera, so it looks satin. While the underside of the door is in an angle, so it looks like a mirror.
I'm thinking about just leaving it like this

I learned a lot with this project, let me know when you are ready. I have a tonne of tips and suggestions that will help you a lot, especially if it's your first time getting your car painted (by bodyshop), like in my case.
