First of all, that figure Ferrari boasts has yet to be substantiated in any private testing.
Second of all, if a wing is generating 550# of lift, that doesn't mean that you car is getting 550# of downforce. Depending in your speed, the average car will generate lift, easily over 100# again depending on speed.
Third of all, the amount of downforce that is considered overkill is a function of venue, not so much how many cylinders you have. The lower the average speed, the more lift/drag you can get away with.
I don't feel like searching, but there is a pic floating around of a formula car on a set scales, and literally the entire car is loaded with sandbags in order to replicate the 1000's of pounds of downforce it might experience @ any given venue @ any given speed.
I wish more manufacturers conduct such testing.
