Auto-Dimming Mirror Retrofit
I used to have an aftermarket plate adapter that was custom machined to fit with the stock butt plate, but that was not an exact fit, and the lack of height adjustability started to get on my nerves. I cut up the OEM mirror, as well as the aftermarket one to create this. Its completely solid and vibration free, while still slightly adjustable via the stock screws into the windshield frame. Its now a couple inches higher than the stock mount, more stable, with several new functions. All modifications and be reverted with a new OEM mirror. I'll add a few details on the photos.

I removed the factory light assembly to allow the mirror to use its vertical space. You can order a mirror with lights under it to replace the lost functionality, and most likely it would be trivial for someone to splice it into the factory harness in the window frame. I didn't think of that until after ordering the mirror.

The factory mirror shaft was cut off at its lowest point, and then drilled/tapped a fine thread hole. The main shaft of the new mirror was removed by splitting it several times and prying it off. The ball of the joint that was still on the mirror was drilled tapped as well. Through trial and error, I bent the threaded rod so it supports the rear of the mirror at the correct angle. A bit of steel wire strung between the two factory screws supports the weight of the mirror and holds it taught to the upper windshield frame.

Its really not as gaudy looking as you might think, I had to use my polarize filter to get these shots. I plan on painting the parts black later.

I have been wanting to put in a basic auto dimming mirror for some time but I did not want to remove the stock mirror mount from the window. I have been trying to figure out how to modify a auto dim mirror to fit the peculiar S mount. Thought of getting another OEM mirror to get a part I could modify and fit to the auto dim mirror.

You can just take it to a windshield place and they will take it off. I replaced mine with the standard mount found on most cars. Cost less than 50 bucks for parts and install. Then you can install any mirror you want with full adjustability
Two years ago, I replaced the factory mirror on our family van ('07 Honda Odyssey). I tried taking the factory mount off the Odyssey windshield myself and part of the windshield glass under the mount sheared off and stayed attached to the mount - local Safelite dealer fixed it for free... so I am definitely going to let them do this rather than risking me messing up another windshield.
Thanks again!
