Clever mounting bracket concepts
OK, with the county where I live now planning to vaporize my bank account via mobile speed cameras, I guess I now need to invest in a radar detector. Sigh.
As I plan on installing/de-installing it twice a day, something better than a visor clip or suction cup windshiled mount would be perferable. I'd like a dash-top mounting, but cannot figure out a place to attach a bracket that minimalizes interior mutilation; perferrably little or no sign of the installation once the detector is squirreled away in the trunk or whatever. My fabricating skills are, well, OK, I do not own a machine shop for instance. Thoughts?
Back in the 70's, a guy in our club was an engineer (electrical?) and mounted a huge plug, like for a clothes dryer, on top of the dash (very early RX-7, IIRC) and the matching socket on the bottom of his detector. The prong on the plug were big enough that this arrangement not only served as the electrical connection for the unit, but physical mount as well. Neat idea but it was quite noticeable on the dash.

Well, anyway...
Leaning toward one of the Escort ones that looks likes and includes a GPS unit. Nosing around the car, cannot think of a clever minimal-defacing place to, uh, drill and place a mount.
Wanting to avoid windshield placement.

Any reason you're wanting dash mount? I'd look into fabricating a bracket that somehow attaches to the upper windshield frame if I was pursuing this route. You might want to expand your search beyond S2000-specific installs for ideas.
Getting an Escort IQ, probably arriving today. Dash mount instead of windshield mount (or higher) should net me a more unobstructed view of the road... we'll see.
